Resident Brian Whitlock saved some serious cash by taking on much of the construction work himself. By wiring his house himself, he saved around $30,000. “People have a visceral fear of electricity, which is healthy in some ways,” he says. “But I think it gets a bad rap.”

Deciding not to paint the original ceiling (”I was tempted so many times!” she says) was one of Leah’s biggest design decisions. “I feared it’d have a cabin look, but ultimately trusted my gut and it turned out to be one of my favorite rooms in the home,” Leah says.

An extension of Treehotel’s mission of bringing modern design to a serene natural environment, the 7th Room is a cabin lofted among the treetops that blurs the distinction between indoors and outdoors. Designed by the renowned firm Snøhetta, the structure hovers 10 meters above the ground with a black-and-white print of the canopy covering the bottom façade, creating a trompe l'oeil effect. The two bedrooms, bathroom, lounge area, and netted terrace are arranged across two slightly different levels, accommodating up to five guests. Barring a fear of heights, you can choose to lay your sleeping bag on the double-layered net that connects the two bedrooms and enjoy a night under the stars.
The building's historic arcade was originally home to 32 shops. After the renovation, fears of it being closed to the public were assuaged when it reopened as the hotel's public lobby, cafe, and restaurant.

The first step, he says, is to just address the issue. Fear of aging—and, by extension, death—means that the issue is often pushed under the rug and hidden away in hospitals and nursing homes. In some ways, acknowledging the inevitability and respecting the benefits that come with experience mark a return to an older way of living when communities supported each other across generations.
