Circular “sun disks” cut into the slanted roof create light shafts that move throughout the day, casting angular shadows as they pass over the steel staircases and catwalk.

Blade Runner by LaCie, $299

Philippe Starck took a break from designing motorcycles and furniture to create this four-terabyte hard drive. Besides the cool geometry, the blades dissipate the heat built up by the spinning disks.

The Orbit One Brass Table Lamp ($925) is a paradigm of simplicity and beauty: anchored by solid base, its spun brass disk is easily articulated and redirected. Seen here is the model with a marble base, though a range of other rich stones and woods are available.

Berlin-based designer Dirk Winkel’s new lamp designed for Wästberg, w164 Alto, has a distinct architectural quality. The top disk of the base is the combined light switch and dimming wheel, and the pole houses a multidirectional LED light that distributes light evenly.

The long floating counter is a sculptural element that continues the line of duct-like exterior elements. The sloping floors are made from a rich-looking African cherry wood called Doussie. The metal disks beside the ramp are smoke and heat vents. The architects aimed to create an interior without any barriers or columns in order to have an uninterrupted spatial continuum. They appear to have succeeded in their efforts.

"As you walk through the different volumes, you never know what’s coming next in terms of the architecture," Nouvel notes. "The idea was to create contrasts, spring surprises. You might, for instance, go from one room closed-off pretty high up by a slanting disk to another room with a much lower intersection. This produces something dynamic, tension."

The Picto Watch is a distinctive timepiece that is at once minimalist and graphic. Comprised of a monochrome case and band, the Picto is the first watch that was created based on a rotating disk principle. Designed by Steen Georg Christensen and Erling Andersen, the watch is meant to be a “picture” of time. As such, the watch communicates time not by the traditional movement of hands, but instead by a rotating watch face.

This watch is also available in all black, red, and black with stainless steel.

Surface Speaker is a minimalist speaker created by London-based studio Room One. The project is a wall-mounted, wireless speaker made from wood. Surface uses Bluetooth technology to bring you the music you want anytime. You can play it using your mobile phone through apps such as iTunes, Spotify, YouTube and Soundcloud. Powered by distinctive acoustic technology, Surface creates sound as frequencies resonate through engineered wood. Surface uses a state of the art technology called transducers to create sound, where the entire surface becomes the speaker as frequencies resonate through the disk.

While much of rural African life revolves around weekly trading gatherings, the economy of individual villages can barely survive. Atelier Masomi hopes to change this with a design that could, if emulated across the region, give communities in an arid landscape short on natural resources a much-needed economic boost and a sense of pride. The architecture firm built a permanent regional market in the village of Dandji with canopies made of cheap and recycled materials that now operates daily instead of weekly. Adapting the regions’s traditional market typology of adobe posts and reed roofs, the design uses compressed earth bricks and metal in a durable, quirky, and visually striking manner. It is also incredibly practical. Colorful, recycled metal disks provide shade usually cast by trees in less severe climates, while arranging them at different levels ensures good ventilation. The compressed earth bricks used for the stalls have similar cooling advantages of the more traditional adobe, but at a fraction of the cost. Bringing this dramatic upgrade to the village infrastructure full circle, the site is centered around an ancestral tree with landscaping that encourages newcomers to gather and sit with the local villagers, increasing interaction socially as well as economically.
