The Citrons inherited the Modernica sofa, chaise, and table from the previous owners. They added a Jasper Morrison cork stools, all by Vitra. The cedar interior walls were inspired by the exterior cladding and are finished in orange oil beeswax by Howard.

Bertoia bar stools by Knoll are tucked under the island in the Scavolini Scenery kitchen. Jordan replaced the original wood flooring with white resin, a robust surface used in high-traffic environments.

The top floor opens onto an expansive deck on the north side of the house. An entry yard on its east side provides a seamless connection to the outdoor environment, while ensuring adequate shading and screening for privacy.

“In consideration of the context, the design aimed to reinterpret the traditional beach shack vernacular in a contemporary way by embracing traditional materials, including corrugated metal, fiber cement sheeting, and timber elements,” Rathmayr says.

The architects’ inventive use of resources helped keep costs down. “We gave the facade’s ribbed metal cladding, commonly used in neighboring beach shacks, a metallic finish that provided a cost-effective solution and an upscale appearance,” Rathmayr says.

In the kitchen, a Blanco exhaust fan is surrounded by a stove, oven, and dishwasher by Westinghouse. A series of pendants by She Lights are equipped with LED fittings.

Black matte bamboo flooring by Silestone and birch ceilings, finished in a walnut stain, add warmth and texture to the interior.

All openings are shade-protected with wide overhangs that prevent overheating and allow maximum light to enter into the living space. "We were inspired by the site, and our desire to have something cool and different," says Moseley.

Occupying a footprint of just 110 square feet, the studio finds smart ways to maximize space. Central to this undertaking is the studio’s cantilever, which appears to float over the stream. The cantilever affords the studio more internal volume, while occupying no greater footprint below.

The Grace Farms Foundation—a faith-based non-profit organization that supports social justice endeavors, the arts, and community initiatives—commissioned the Japanese architecture firm SANAA to design a multipurpose structure dubbed "the River." Set to open in fall 2015, the building will be the firm's first completed project in the United States since winning the Pritzker Prize in 2010. Funding for the $60 million project came from individual gifts.

Environmental sensitivity was paramount to Grace Farms and a number of grean features will be incorporated: high-efficiency mechanical, electrical, and lighting systems; energy-efficient glazing; a reflective aluminum roof to reduce heat absorbtion; and water-conservation measures. The building is housed under a continual roof and slopes down a 38-foot grade.
