From the Central Pavilion: The winner of the Silver Lion, this installation features large scale models of the Paulo Mendes da Rocha’s Serra Dourada Stadium in Brazil and Grafton Architects’ UTEC university campus in Lima. The influence that the Brazilian Pritzker prize has had on the Irish architects is revealed by the researched subjects as “built geography," “abstracted landscape," “landscape and infrastructure,” and “the horizon and the human being” (suggestive of a comparison of the landscapes of Machu Picchu in Peru and Skellig Michael off the west coast of Ireland). It also explores the possibilities of the ‘Free Section’ as a representation and work resource for big scale projects that encourage fluid, generous, open, and massive spaces.

To most eyes, Ezequiel Farca’s 1970s-style concrete home in Mexico City looked like a teardown. Even the lot itself—shallow and crammed against a steep hillside—wasn’t particularly alluring. But Farca saw through all the restraints to create a spa-like refuge in one of the world’s most energetic cities. "It’s is such a hectic place. You’re bombarded by so much information the moment you step into the streets," says Farca, who first gained prominence as a furniture and interior designer. "So we envisioned this house as a retreat, a kind of a temple." The rooftop courtyard is lined with a verdant mix of indigenous plants, including banana trees, palm trees, lion’s claw, Mexican breadfruit, and native vines. The chaise longues were designed for Farca’s EF Collection.

The lion décor is a playful reference to the child’s name.

Custom modular furniture and a slide that conjures indoor playground vibes are among the highlights at the sustainably minded Lion International Kindergarten.

The scenic desert habitat is home to a rich ecosystem and desert-adapted animals, including hyenas, lions, elephants, oryx, and giraffes.

Ishigami was an architect at SANAA before founding Junya Ishigami + Associates in 2004. He won the Golden Lion award at the Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2010.

Sally Julien and Peter Loforte sit on the porch of the Aqua Lair, their restored 1960s house on Lake Sammamish, near Seattle. The Bertoia chairs and clay lion are from Pacific Galleries.

The dining area is completely open to the outdoors. “Ian and Krista wanted to celebrate their everyday routine and abandon things they don’t use, like a formal dining space,” says Jess. The Jorn dining table is by Minotti while the Mariposa chairs are by Fyrn. The grill is by Lion and the heater is by Heatstrip.

Upon entering, a wall adorned with lion-faced door knockers captures attention—seven of them subtly concealed in the same texture as the wall, while one stands out in a bold, gleaming metallic gold.

Once prohibition was lifted, The Lion Brewery, Inc. of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, set about serving its beer—Gibbons Ale—in these black-and-gold cans.
