i3by BMW

BMW designed and developed the i3 as an electric vehicle from the ground up. It has a carbon-fiber body shell—the same material used in high-performance bicycles—that’s 1,000 pounds lighter than a steel version. The car can go up to 100 miles between charges, more than enough for the typical city driver, according to pilot-program research. Added bonus: The i3 can parallel park itself. Look for it in showrooms in early 2014. (Concept car shown.) bmwusa.com

Double Space for BMW at the Victoria and Albert Museum (September 13-21)

Extending the art-as-mirror metaphor across a storied museum space, designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby built a pair of massive kinetic mirrors that will bend and distort the way viewers encounter the Raphael Gallery.

Perhaps the structure’s most impressive feature is a wall-mounted BMW M1 hanging in the basement—a carefully completed job that securely bolted the engineless sports car to the wall. A custom lift carries vehicles between the structure's three levels.

"Powered by a 3.2 liter V8, that developed 148 hp, mated to a four-speed manual, the BMW 507 was one of the coolest cars of its time. Unfortunately, the BMW 507 was too expensive to make and too expensive to buy, so it didn’t last very long and almost bankrupt BMW."

In 1939, Carrozzeria Touring in Milan built this “superleggera” body on a BMW 328 chassis to be used for long-distance racing. It’s lightweight and aerodynamic shape allowed it to hit a top speed of 137 and completed the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 1939. Here's a project by Scholten and Baijings, the design duo known for a sophisticated use of pattern and color. Using the forms of the latest Mini as templates, they collaborated with BMW and Mini Holland to explore the future of the brands through various scenarios and themes. It can’t be a coincidence that the head of global design at BMW is also a Dutchman, Adriaan Van Hoojdonk.
