Though it might be hard to pry yourself away from the hotel, there's much to see in the city. Here are Heckman's go-to suggestions:

"Exploring the Downcity neighborhood and the adjacent historic neighborhoods is a safe bet. Providence is a small, compact city and very walkable. The hotel has bikes for loan too. The architecture changes dramatically block to block and the neighborhood feel can differ dramatically by crossing the street."

"Al Forno is the go-to for their famous grilled pizza. North has creative, casual Asian fare. The Shop is a gorgeous little coffee shop in Fox Point and a favorite of design groupies. Justine’s is a speakeasy in rough and tumble Olneyville. Birch is a serious restaurant with twelve seats and a tasting menu. Downtown has so many new additions that have opened recently and are really stellar—Ken’s Ramen, Bodega Malasana, Rosalina’s, the Eddy, etc. And of course our own bars (The Boombox and The Magdalenae Room) and Bolt Coffee."

The solution to the problem of the telephone pole was to place the entry at the side. “Putting the home entry on the side allows one to create full rooms at each end of the house without running a hallway through them,” says Wu.

The lava-stone sink and vanity is placed across the bathroom, maximizing space. The faucets, fashioned after hose reels, tie back to the Flower District. Cheeky phrases like “Some Regrets” and “Get Wild” adorn the tiled shower and bathroom stalls, and other lighthearted Easter eggs like custom ASMR videos on the television and celebrity-told bedtime stories on the telephone lie waiting to be discovered.

The home’s namesake is a 26-foot-tall shade structure called a ramada. The name derives from the Spanish word for ‘branches,’ and it’s a regional construction technique mastered by the Tohono O'odha tribe. A total of 20 Douglas fir telephone poles support the 2 x 4 lattice canopy, which provides shade and casts dramatic shadows across the white, mortar-washed slump blocks.

Before: The Jennings Residence was built in 1965. The entry has a distinct vaulted ceiling over the stairwell, with a skylight and expressed structure. “The architecture team had envisioned using telephone poles for the posts but they weren't able to get the telephone poles up the street because it's winding and narrow,” says Jason Miller Smith, the current owner. “So, they flew the poles in via helicopter to the job site. To this day, everyone on the street says, ‘You moved into the helicopter house.’”

How does civic design become a part of national identity? In the case of the public phone booth, the answer is rapidly. The UK installed more than 20,000 K6 telephone kiosks, designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, by the 1930s.

"Data Mass Projection," by Yulia Pinkusevich, is an installation in the basement (and onetime grow room) created out of telephone and data wires found throughout the Laguna Street house. According to the artist, the installation serves as metaphor for a spectrometer-like visualization of digital data and information surrounding us at all times.

King scored a small coup recently when he held the release party for Cityscapes in the lobby of the indefinitely closed Pacific Telephone Building. The stunning lobby is in the maximalist art deco mode and a true treasure that the local gawkers don't get to see much of these days. A "Roaring Twenties triumph" indeed.
