Tina Roth Eisenberg runs a successful graphic design company, but is perhaps better known as the author behind the design-centric blog, SwissMiss. Dokter and Misses, a husband and wife design team based in Johannesburg, was included in Dwell's New Guard round-up for 2012. This year, they opened a new home goods shop at 44 Stanley where visitors can buy their colorful, accessible pieces that merge industrial and graphic design.

Neither the owner, a self-declared "card-carrying-modernist," or his girlfriend, Stephanie Kiriakopolos, miss having a big bulky refrigerator.

The couple asked for a “no maintenance, not low maintenance” backyard. “People have a real obsession with putting things on the water,” says Campos. “They feel as though they paid for ocean or something, and they just need to stare at the ocean. And, I think that they really miss any opportunity to have a bit of foreground.”

Derek and his partner, Jean Banks, share the house with their two Spinone Italianos, Ben and Quinn. A Trumpet light from Dokter and Misses hangs next to the arched double doors at the home’s entrance, which is framed by brick that matches the patio.

Walking in the front door it's hard to miss the square chunk of compressed-straw paneling—a building material-cum-sculpture that allows visitors to see what the house is made from. Kahn's paintings hang throughout the house, and several of the rugs are her original designs.

Upstairs, there are three kids’ rooms and a shared bathroom. The stair landing fosters a lot of storage. “Longer views of trees in the distance are captured from the upstairs bedrooms. A snippet of the outside is seen through a small triangular window at the top of the stairs, providing a view that’d be missed otherwise,” said the firm.

The birch plywood Miss Susan ($175), a mod take on a lazy susan, was designed by Cecilia León de la Barra last year.

DeMarie used these images to determine the best way to update the recessed lighting and recreate the original shade of stain applied on the plywood walls. Not one to miss the tiniest of details, Frans had the entire apartment wired for temperature, lighting, and sound control he conveniently accesses via phone. They not only got the mudroom, but also managed to fold in multiple, flexible spaces to this origami apartment. Their new “studio” might be the only one in all of Manhattan with as many separate rooms as they now have, perfectly positioned within one unique space.

No Details Missed In This Contemporary Design

We nearly missed Ready to Hang’s booth at the very end of our tour and I’m so glad we didn’t. The New York-based studio creates beautiful collectible mirrors. The yellow cloth in their booth made for a sunny and warm presentation that highlighted the various shapes of each unique piece. It was a lovely place to end the day.

The owners of the 1929 Lovell Health house agreed to a rare tour of their home as part of the 85th anniversary celebration.
