"One of the most important features of Freebooter is its use of light, itself famous in the Netherlands and used as the inspiration for some of the world’s most beloved paintings by the Dutch masters," Garziano explains. "I am deeply fascinated by it and I aimed to explore the topic within the envelope of the facade with a very technical yet emotional approach."

Model No.’s offering is a refreshing antidote to consumer fatigue when it comes to “green” design. “People lose interest in the topic, and now is not the time to lose interest,” says cofounder and COO Jillian Northrup. “It’s more imperative than ever to focus on our environmental impact and choices of what we buy.”

Related to the philodendron, the dieffenbachia contains the same oxalate crystals. However, unlike philodendrons, dieffenbachia ingestion usually produces only mild-to-moderate symptoms. If a leaf is chewed, it can cause a oral irritation, intense burning, and irritation of mouth, tongue and lips, excessive drooling, difficulty swallowing, and vomiting. Other names include charming dieffenbachia, giant dumb cane, tropic snow, dumbcane, exotica, spotted dumb cane, and exotica perfection.

“Design is such an enormous topic that it takes multiple voices to address it,” Zoe Ryan says. “You never know what ideas you’ll ignite by creating a safe place for people to come and talk and ask questions that seem simple but which open up huge areas of discussion. So I see myself as the facilitator.”

Pop!Tech is held at the height of fall each year at the Camden Opera House in midcoast Maine, but the conference spills out into the small streets. The town green hosted this installation from the London-based design research studio, Loop.pH. Entitled "Archilace," the structure was designed as an antidote to traditional, rigid architecture and built using traditional textile processes. The firm sees imagines adapting the process for everything from lightweight, vertical, urban farming frames to emergency relief shelters.

"Global warming is one of the most important issues and topics of today," says Nicolas Prieto, chairman of Melting Ice, the association behind Project Trumpmore. "There are still people who ponder whether it’s a real issue. We want to build the monument for all of us, so we can see how long the sculpture lasts before melting. Often people only believe something when they see it with their own eyes."

Despite prefab's ability to cut down on site construction time, delivery of components is still reliant mainly on trucks—it's a pure intersection of design and mobility. It took eight flatbeds to deliver the Marmol Radziner–designed prefab house in Desert Hot Springs, now owned by Kristopher Dukes and Matt Jacobsen, who hosted a private dinner for Dwell and Volvo during Modernism Week. The topics of conversation? Mobility and design, technology, and the future.

A contentious topic in San Francisco has been the use of private commuter buses used to transport employees between their residences and offices. "The Stamen shuttle map initially set out to map the routes and frequency of buses operated by tech companies like Google and Apple," Arieff says. "Little did the folks at Stamen know that their map would come to function for many as a visual document of Bay Area gentrification—and that real estate agents would use it to market their properties."

As pioneers in the emergent Hip-Hop Architecture movement, Tajai Massey and Sekou Cooke will discuss their separate paths in bringing together these two seemingly disparate communities—hip-hop and architecture. Massey will discuss his journey from international rap star (he’s a founding member of Souls of Mischief and Hieroglyphics) to architecture student and practitioner. Cooke will discuss his journey into curating and reifying the importance of hip-hop culture within the discipline of architecture. Both will reflect on personal and professional experience to imagine new approaches and angles for developing this rich topic.

“I think it’s very important that your first body of work takes‚ let’s say‚ five years. It takes a while to build your own vocabulary and to find your own way. What are you addressing? Come up with a topic and build a collection of objects that shows the world what you stand for. Don’t just take it out of a book. It’s a matter of being authentic in your way of bringing the world something that we need—and not just another style. If you spend five years on a collection‚ and show it around‚ the industry will see you. You don’t have to reach out.”

With the U.S. presidential election around the bend, the Harvard University Graduate School of Design is investigating the relationship between architecture and politics via Zoom. First up, (September 28) Danielle Allen, the James Bryant Conant University Professor at Harvard University and director of Harvard’s Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics, joins Michael Murphy, founding principal and executive director of Boston-based MASS Design Group for a discussion about the 2020 American Academy of Arts & Sciences report, "Our Common Purpose." Hosted by the school’s dean, Sarah Whiting, it will probe the idea of voting as both a civic and design issue and sets the scene for next month’s fitting topic, "The Architecture of Democracy" (October 28) in partnership with MIT.

No-No Table is a minimalist table created by Stockholm-based designers Note Design Studio for Menu. No-No is characterized by lightness. The elegant and slim legs provide the full support for the solid glass tabletop that beautifully reflects its surroundings. The modern materials emphasize the clean and stylish aesthetics. And the simplistic yet eye-catching design makes No-No a great addition to any living area. No-No Table is the result of an encounter between two Scandinavian studios, Note Design Studio and Norm Architects. During a visit to Milan, the Swedish and Danish designers met by coincidence – and started talking. Amongst many other things, the topic of the conversation was a shared interest in the juxtaposition of solid tops supported by slender legs. The idea of a collaboration quickly followed.

Branch #2 is a minimal light created by France-based designer Ferréol Babin commissioned by Bazar Noir. Ferréol Babin collaborates mainly with various furniture and lighting editors where he can incorporate his singular vision and approach of design. His main concern is rather based on an expressive plastic than a dialog between rationality and lucrative topics, while his language of plastic has an obvious brutalist approach. Dirty-hands, mix of mediums such as painting, sculpture, design and handcraft play their role in each of his creation. He draws his inspiration from nature in general and likes therefore to translate the contrast of nature and technique while mixing improbable materials together and trying out some innovative techniques. By that mean he comes up with various finishing and dares unlikely mix of colors, lines to emphasize on contrasts and to mark extremes, opposites and antipodes. These mix of characteristics are present in every and each of his creation which emanates in balance and perfect harmony.
