From SF Design Build
San Francisco Design Build was hired to complete a full home remodel with a top floor addition for this single-family Victorian home. On the existing main level, we reworked the layout to create more functional public spaces with the kitchen, living and dining at the rear of the home, opening to the yard.
The private areas on this floor include a flexible office and guest room connected by the existing large parlor doors. The new stairs to the addition are accessed from the front entry, with “hidden” (see photos) storage and powder room tucked underneath. The top floor addition includes a kids bedroom and hall bath, a primary suite, and a library + office area at the shared landing.
In order to maximize exterior views and light throughout the entire home, skylights and large windows were added on the top floor, existing windows were replaced with new and a large sliding exterior door and transom were added at the rear.
The permit process for this project was very long, and there was also extensive structural work involved to accommodate city requirements because of the steep hill. The homeowners were endlessly patient and remained optimistic throughout the entire process. We were all thrilled when we finally had our permits and could start the build!
The homeowners were also design savvy, selecting all of their finishes and fixtures. We worked together to create a balance of old architectural details with new, so that the spaces feel cohesive and fresh throughout.
