From Floating Homes to Prefab Moss-Covered Theaters, This Firm's Monograph Has It All

The architecture firm MOS—headed by Hilary Sample and Michael Meredith—have a new monograph documenting their extensive works.

For their MOMA PS1 Young Architect's Prize-winning design, titled Afterparty, MOS designed these thatch-covered thermal chimneys. The tower-like structures draw warm air upwards, cooling the spaces below to keep visitors comfortable.

To further cool the pavilion, mist was sprayed on the thatch: the water droplets would absorb the surrounding heat and evaporate, taking the heat with them.

With its industrial cement panel exterior, these art studios in Denmark by MOS fully embrace minimalism's aesthetic. That's not to say the design isn't enriching: several porches and a large courtyard create plenty of room for play and socializing. Large windows and doors create connections to the outdoors as well.
