European castle

In the dining area, the barn’s structure is visible through both a skylight and a glass wall with a sliding door.

Designer Ralph Germann inserted a partially glazed box into a 19th-century barn to form the main living space of Christine Bonvin’s home in Switzerland. Soft light enters through original arrow-loop windows.

A 32-foot billiards room is lined with herringbone parquet floors. The intricately designed ceiling and carved fireplace are from the Hearst Castle in San Simeon.

On the terrace, Air chairs by Jasper Morrison for Magis surround an oak table with black trestle legs. The limestone used to build the original structure was sourced from a quarry less than a half-mile away.

Among the family’s favorite pieces is a 1957 leather Paulistano chair by Paulo Mendes da Rocha that Russell and Oona purchased to celebrate their marriage. “It’s important to us that the house is filled with beautiful things, but it has to be a place where it’s okay to put your feet on the sofa,” Oona explains.

Floris, seven, stands on the mezzanine next to a walnut version of the Wave sideboard her father designed for Content by Terence Conran. The enamel water jug was found at a local brocante market.

The newly renovated Cottonland Castle is located in the Gainses’ hometown of Waco, Texas.

The Château, La Chaize vineyard, and the newly restored chai (storeroom), pictured above, are all registered as French historical monuments.

Tall windows invite warm natural light into one of the many octagonal-shaped sitting areas.

The main residence offers a mix of Spanish, Art Deco, and Assyrian styles. Egyptian-themed geometric pillars, gilded ceilings, and arched passageways are just a few of its many notable features.
