Dwell Guide to Los Angeles Design
Dwell—which maintains two primary offices in San Francisco and New York—considers Los Angeles, host to our annual Dwell on Design show, as its third home. In homage, we've put together a local guide to modern design, from midcentury architecture to emerging designers.
Midcentury remodels are the bailiwick of Dwell's Los Angeles coverage, so we're always excited for midcentury-focused home tours, like the one MAK Center organized in 2014 showing off six area houses designed by architect Rudolph Schindler. (Take a closer look at the iconic Bubeshko apartments in our renovation feature from February 2012.)
Faced with a sloped property in the developed suburban neighborhood of Mt. Washington, architect Michael Ferguson cleverly positioned VillaCasa's lower level in the center of the property. The end result is a home combining expansive views and privacy with the comforts of a less formal retreat. Photo by Joshua White Photography.
