A Look at Lacquer in Modern Homes
Lacquer found its way into modern design thanks to individuals like Eileen Gray, who learned the craft from a Japanese artisan and incorporated it into her works. Glossy, smooth, and reflective, it's an unmistakable feature of any room.
This house in Carmel by the Sea is enlivened by its very red kitchen cabinetry. By knocking down a dividing wall, the architects opened the kitchen up to the rest of the living space. Ikea red lacquer cabinetry and Caesarstone countertops replace dingy cupboards and old-fashioned finishes. Stainless steel appliances help ground the airy, open space.
On the uppermost level, long drawers coated in the same lacquer finish as the kitchen cabinetry make the most of the cranked roofline. A simple partition separates the bathroom and bedroom, which houses a bed from Natural Bed Company, ensuring that light permeates the entire floor. American Black Walnut flooring unites the entire space.
