Yellow communicates happiness and is visually sunny. This bright example imbues radiant energy that is perfect for a kitchen, while a muted yellow is considered more of a soothing neutral.

Once we move inside the Swink Agency to the lobby, we see that some very groovy action indeed. Bestor gave each area of the house its own color scheme. The bright yellow stairwell maintains a cheery mood throughout.

The duo installed a small pool in a corner of the property, taking care not to disturb any of the existing architecture. As Beckmann demonstrates, they left space between the original building and the new day-glo yellow walls.

The classic yellow Robin Day chairs from Habitat perfectly complement the purple Jack light by Tom Dixon. Piers designed and built the table when he was in architecture school.

Custom birch millwork, fabricated by Toronto's Gibson Greenwood, defines a home office space on the second floor. Susan brought the yellow couch at right when she emigrated from Hungary in 1969.

Furnished with vintage Eames chairs, a second-hand sofa, and pendants and tables designed by Nathalie, the space is kept purposefully casual. She painstakingly mixed and tested the paint for the mustard-yellow walls herself—15 times—to match the hue of a Kvadrat textile.

Throughout the house, Curtiss mixed natural materials with industrial ones. Downstairs, fir and cedar wood on the doors and open-joisted ceiling balance the colder, industrial feel of the concrete floor and steel staircase railing. In the dining room, a pendant lamp from RLM Lighting hangs above a table that combines Cherner table legs with a new white laminate top. The yellow chairs are by Tolix.

“This is a humanized landscape of meadows, walls, ash, streams, a small-scale landscape, minimal, almost domestic, and where absolutely everything happens in yellow,” the architects wrote in a statement. To that end, the only hint of color on the house’s otherwise natural exterior is a door painted a vibrant lemon-yellow hue.

When it came to paint the 40-foot-long curving steel-and-glass window wall designed by Chris and fabricated by Sand Studios, the Deams turned to Steve Bauer of Baumar, who specializes in custom paint finishes, to get the job done. Metallic automotive paint stands up well to the elements—from blaring sunlight to heavy rain—and comes in an almost infinite array of colors.

The hostel is located in Ghent's university district in the center of town, opposite the renowned art center Vooruit. The Art Deco lobby and stairwells are painted in a vibrant yellow.
