YDesign’s New Bay Area Headquarters Inspire Collaboration in a Colorful Setting

YDesign’s New Bay Area Headquarters Inspire Collaboration in a Colorful Setting

By Anna Squier
The new Walnut Creek, California, offices of YDesign Group reflects the brand’s vibrant, innovative lighting and furnishing products.

As a design-driven company, it was necessary that YDesign Group—the parent company of online retailers Lumens, YLighting, and YLiving - partner with an interior design firm that would be able to replicate the company's culture and commitment to design in their Walnut Creek headquarters in California’s East Bay.

The front entry and waiting area is stylish and sleek with a blend of Blu Dot and Herman Miller furnishings atop a hide rug from Forsyth.

Kriste Michelini Interiors collaborated with YDesign Group to create a workplace that could bring the company’s own vision to life in a vibrant, modern office space. Given the company’s mission of bringing great design into spaces of work and play, it is only natural that YDesign Group would follow the same mantra in their new work space.

"Functionally, we wanted to create spaces that made collaborating and colliding a natural effect, whether at someone’s desk, in a kitchen, or at a ping pong table," says Sean Callahan, CEO of YDesign Group. "And we wanted each of those spaces to feel creative and inspired with our brand colors at the forefront and pieces from the design firms we know and love."

Throughout the space, the culture of the company is represented in the design. Here, a bolt LED Wall Sconce and wall graphic nicely highlight the brand. Pull up a seat on the bench or ottomans from BluDot, and start conceptualizing ideas on this writable table from Turnstone.

Inspired by YDesign’s own portfolio and the growing start-up scene in nearby Silicon Valley, Michelini conceptualized a contemporary office space that reflects not only the company itself, but incorporates benchmark office design solutions that will provide flexibility for ever-changing workplace standards.

Blu Dot Pi Coffee Table
The Pi Coffee Table by Blu Dot features slices of powder-coated steel combined with solid walnut legs, resulting in some eye-catching results.
Blu Dot Bumper Ottoman
Stay afloat with current design trends with the simply modern Bumper Ottoman. Great for use as an occasional table, footstool, seating, and more.  The Bumper Ottoman is a flexible piece of furniture that's ready to fill your needs.

The circular Pi coffee table by Blu Dot and a classic, padded Eames Lounge chair are the perfect combination.

The headquarters fill 20,000 square feet across two floors. Contemporary furniture installations and accessories carry throughout the space, cohesively tied together through combinations of gray, red, yellow, and orange—all of which work together to create a vibrant setting reflective of YDesign’s unique brand.

An open floor plan creates a seamless connection between various spaces. Bold colors carry from space to space with special accents like the Nest Pillow.

Simple Caesarstone countertops are accented by pops of color in the red bar, multi-tone cabinets, and pendant light fixtures by Troy. Complete with Lez swivel bar stools, the break room is a great place to enjoy lunch or hold an informal meeting.

Bold colors in classic, modern furnishings create a fun work environment. Red and orange Kartell chairs, Modway dining chairs, and a stylish Ping Pong table by RS Barcelona combine to create an energetic, multi-functional space.

Simple white workstations combine with lively collaboration spaces. The variety of settings allows for both focused and collaborative work. Flexible, multipurpose spaces are incorporated throughout, including two cutting-edge kitchens that serve as gathering spots for lunch, informal meetings, or impromptu conversations.

Kartell Eros Swivel Chair
A chic blend of different finishes and the subtle use of color make the Kartell Ero/S/Swivel Chair the best option for working at a desk or sitting around the dining room table.  The polished aluminum base swivels 360 degrees to keep busy professionals in touch with everything they need to get...
Herman Miller Sayl Basic Work Chair
Live life unframed. Herman Miller teamed with industrial designer Yves Béhar to create the SAYL® Adjustable Work Chair. Stripping down all assumptions and conventions, the team built this chair from the bottom up, with the user fully in mind. That resulted in a literally unframed design.

Open workstations combine with collaboration spaces. Herman Miller Sayl Task Chairs provide just the right support for getting work done.

Pops of color carry through from the cabinets, to the carpet tiles, to the artwork and furnishings. Black and white accents balance with the boldness.

Custom-made panels provide some privacy and separation in the open space.

A custom pattern and color combination of FLOR carpet tiles adds variety to the flooring. Berlin shelving with Dorian bins adds functional storage.

These days, the integration of technology is a key component to a successful workplace. Here, Michelini discretely embedded screens into the ceiling that rise and descend as needed. Idea paint on the walls encourages innovation, providing additional writing space for impromptu brainstorming.

Kriste Michelini, founder of Kriste Michelini Interiors, and Sean Callahan, CEO of YDesign, consult on upholstery options.

A successful collaboration between two design enthusiasts, a talented interior designer, and a design-driven client, has resulted in a forward-thinking, modern office space where employees can thrive.
