Before & After: An Architect Upgrades a Blah Berkeley Bungalow With a Stylish Addition

By adding 450 square feet of space, architect Rudabeh Pakravan was able to completely reimagine her family’s 1926 home in West Berkeley, California.
After living in the modest two-bedroom, one-bathroom bungalow for 12 years, Rudabeh Pakravan knew all the possible ways to configure the space for guests. "Before the pandemic, there was always someone in our house—my in-laws, my parents, friends," says the architect, who shares the two-story home with her husband, Farbod; 16-year-old son, Mani; and their terrier, Otto.
