Live Out Your Fantasies in This Whimsical Hobbit-Style Home for $600K

The newly listed free-form home is nestled in a thicket of honeysuckles and sycamores.

Near the base of the Sierras and California’s Sequoia National Park sits a striking organic home known as the Creek House. The wavelike dwelling was built by award-winning architect Arthur Dyson in 1986, and it just hit the market for the first time in three decades.

Located in Sanger, California, The Creek House sits on six acres of thick vegetation. Collins Creek, a tributary of the Kings River, borders the property.

Speaking about the design, Dyson says: "I never became an architect to design what had already been [done], but to look for a better way. My goal wasn't simply to do something different, but to do something better. Rather than trying to enclose the clients, we tried to embrace them."

The whimsical house features a curved, uneven shingled facade that appears to cradle the hobbit-like front door. "Everything about the design is intentional and serves a purpose," says listing agent Nader Assemi. "That’s what makes it special."

Measuring 1,845 square feet, the unique residence has a relatively subdued interior with three bedrooms and two and a half baths. Geometric shapes intersect with custom wood details throughout the home, and the double-height living room features a wall of glass overlooking the swoon-worthy natural setting.

The home opens into a large living room, complete with a wraparound bar in the kitchen. A free-flowing layout connects the living room with the dining area.

A masonry block wall beside the front door contrasts with custom wood moldings along the kitchen island and ceiling.

"We had an idea that we would make something secluded," says current homeowner Deborah Lapp. "You are completely involved in nature. It’s important that someone comes into this house and knows how to love it. I’m hoping to sell the house to someone who will treasure it in that way." The kitchen includes original, custom-designed cabinetry that complements molding details throughout the rest of the home.

A staircase leading to the upper level features a neo–Art Deco railing. A circular cutout in the wall connects to the master bedroom.

The wood-burning fireplace is nestled in an angled alcove. Sliding glass doors lead out onto a large deck.

A peek into the master bedroom on the second floor. Additional sliding glass doors provide access to a private balcony.

The master bath features an oversized soaking tub.

A spacious home office is also located on the upper level.

Two beds offer additional sleeping quarters in the lofted area overlooking the living room.

The wooden rear deck offers a spacious place for entertaining. Sounds from the nearby creek create a tranquil environment.

The Creek House glows beautifully at night.
