A Coastal Retreat in Oregon Stars Tiny Cabins and Upgraded Airstreams
Set on 103 acres on picturesque Coos Bay in Southern Oregon, Bay Point Landing is an outdoor resort offering Scandinavian-inspired cabins, Airstreams, and full-amenity RV sites. The architects, OFFICEUNTITLED, took cues from the local landscape and weather to shape the site. "Seeing the hills of the dunes bounce around each other helped me design the roof [of the clubhouse], which is tiled up to emulate them," says principal architect Christian Robert. "The angled layout was intentional to help protect our guests from the wind."
Bay Point Landing offers cabin and Airstream accommodations, RV sites, a communal clubhouse, an indoor saltwater pool, an event hall, a private beach—and plenty of open spaces for surfing, whale watching, crabbing, fishing, or hiking.
RV sites have access to Bay Point Landing’s clubhouse and amenities, including laundry facilitates and private bathrooms.
Portland-based interior design firm JHL Design was brought on to outfit the interiors of the cabins and communal spaces with a simple look that would vibe with the architecture. "Given the modern aesthetic and youthful appeal, our design intent was to select items that had clean lines while also adding some texture to the spaces," shares principal Holly Freres. "It also was of huge importance that everything was extremely durable given its hospitality application and coastal location."
The angular, wood-paneled, "Dune" cabins are self-sufficient tiny houses that can comfortably sleep six guests. They come with a kitchenette, full bathroom, and an outdoor patio with a fire pit and picnic table.
The Dune cabin features a loft space overlooking a dinette, which can be converted into an additional bed.
Past the kitchenette is a full bathroom with a sink, toilet, shower, and bathtub stocked with Beekman 1802 luxury soaps.
Designed for two guests, the Kamp Haus cabins have private porches and Adirondack lounge chairs. Cooking grills are available upon request.

Bay Point Landing’s updated Airstreams let you camp in comfort and style.
The Airstreams can sleep up to four guests, and each one has a kitchenette, a convertible dinette, a private bath with a shower, and an outdoor fire pit.
The angular clubhouse appears to hover above the sand. "We wanted the sand to be able to continually flow beneath it," shares Robert. "When you are traveling in an RV, a lot of times there aren’t many communal areas to hang out in, so we essentially pulled [the clubhouse] apart to create more common space between the buildings. And the long lines of the building have large windows to help bring the outside in." The innovative design of Bay Point Landing hasn’t gone unnoticed—it was recently named one of Hospitality Design’s top 20 hotel openings in 2019.
The clubhouse is elevated over the sand to lessen its impact on the environment. "We wanted the sand to be able to continually flow beneath it," says Robert.
"The beauty of Bay Point is that this place is magical. When you’re here, you’re able to reconnect with nature, with yourself, with your family," says Robert. "You’re spending time outdoors and coming back to modern comforts. We want guests to [walk] away feeling whole."
The communal areas are "pulled apart" to create space between each of the structures.
The event center is illuminated by large skylights overhead. The space opens to an outdoor deck. The design is a mix of store-bought and vintage with kilim rugs and woven baskets hung as wall art "to add a cozy factor and texture to the concrete and wood space," says Morgan.

The high, angled ceiling and full-height windows provide perspective on the natural surroundings.
The indoor pool area needed to be durable and mold-resistant. "We selected a mix of solid and woven pieces from Restoration Hardware, Four Hands, and Palacek including a handsome woven lounge chair," says JHL's creative director Liz Morgan. "To add some fun and interest for nighttime swimming, we procured some waterproof globe lights that can sit on the pool deck and float in the water."
The Pavilion is an indoor/outdoor event space that is outfitted with long, communal teak dining tables.
