Large windows and sliding doors with maximal operability are placed throughout, including the master bedroom, where expansive lift-and-slide mechanisms line three exterior walls. The room is furnished by a custom mahogany headboard and bed frame by Larry Hepler and a glass Murano lamp by Massimiliano Schiavon.
With a gentle nudge, architect John Senhauser pushes a custom bed outside onto the terrace. The bed travels along a metal track set into the white-oak floor. The ceiling rafters are Douglas fir.
Senhauser's clients initially wanted a retractable roof, but were persuaded to do something more practical. "We kind of noodled around with the idea and ultimately decided that it would be easier if the bed came out on the porch than the roof rolling back over the bedroom," Senhauser says. A bank of folding doors by NanaWall opens to a terrace that overlooks a swimming pool. The bed is normally stationed against a wall but can slide onto the terrace when the residents wish to sleep outside.
Architect John Senhauser was asked to design a master bedroom addition 1950s ranch house in Cincinnati, Ohio, belonging to a lawyer and his wife.
To free up space, beds, shelves, and a sofa appear to be built into the wall. To accommodate the gentle curve of the "unit," the architects selected birch plywood. A large window is opposite of the beds.

Salminen built the bunk beds out of birch, Finland’s most plentiful tree species, for the couple’s children.
Debbi Gibbs’s son Blake had one primary design requirement: bunk beds. Specifically, he wanted "two sets of single bunks, one on each side, with a bridge over the top." Gibbs says the Venetian-style arched bridge connecting the two beds exceeded her expectations: "I was expecting a flat platform, but our builder decided to take Blake’s request (to connect them) and made him his very own Bridge of Sighs."
For the library, Reddy paired a vibrant Mongolian wool rug from Niba with a pair of modular plastic Pop chairs by Piero Lissoni and Carlos Tamborini for Kartell.
Intimately intertwined with the jungle’s natural density, Mashpi Lodge is an immensely serene, deeply immersive experience in the heart of an otherwise treacherous land. It’s hard to believe the whitewashed stone structure was erected to stand tall amidst conditions that are constantly damp.
Light floods the second floor master bedroom, and floor-to-ceiling windows are buffered by adjacent steel mesh wall. A Modloft Ludlow platform bed anchors the room, and Pablo Designs bedside table lamps delicately punctuate the minimal space.
When not in use as the headboard, the large redwood slab folds down to become a desk.
From the northeast corner of the master bedroom, the homeowners can walk out onto a deck area to enjoy the view of the woods.
