Top 9 Gardens of 2020: The verdant spaces nominated for the Dwell Design Awards help enliven their biophilic homes.

The expansive, covered patio that extends from the living space features an outdoor kitchen and adjoining pizza oven. “My favorite aspect of the project was that the clients embraced the idea that home can be more than just shelter,” says architect Cavin Costello. “It can be a place that incentivizes you to socialize, think, eat, work, create, and play differently.”
Georgina, Diego, and their two children, 10-year-old Nicoletta and seven-year-old Arturo.
The couple is eager to host a party with Diego’s band after the pandemic to take full advantage of the new deck and its amphitheater-like seating.
To his credit, the original owner and builder of an ’80s-era home in Byron Bay, Australia, kept it “in pretty good nick,” as designer Micka Etheridge puts it. “He’d dusted the window frames once a week for thirty-five years.” Etheridge took that same care expanding the house for its new owners, Cheryl and James Kitchener, who love its greenery and mellow, vintage vibe.
“We’re always throwing events,” says Paul, so the indoor/outdoor style was a great fit for them.
Bordering a six-acre nature preserve, Michael Haverland’s timeless Glass House has a saltwater lap pool, a travertine patio, and a detached 600-square-foot studio.

"We didn't want to put a lot of furniture out there," says Terry of the east terrace, adding that they sometimes bring the dining table outside for meals. "You can make it work with whatever you want."
The fire pit area displays a 48-inch concrete fire bowl, woven chairs, and upcycled tree stumps for kid-friendly-seating.
Both the bedrooms have built-in wardrobes.
In a guestroom in Villa 1, an original 1970s bed by Fagnola is paired with a new Tab T lamp by Flos and Yves Klein blue walls.
The master bedroom has a Restoration Hardware bed, wall sconces from Designer Metal Works, and a wall of windows.
Here, the bed is by And So To Bed.
A freestanding tub in the bedroom is a little touch of hotel luxury.
Keep it light and airy in the bedroom—and make sure to vacuum under the bed.
The master bedroom boasts a 1970s tufted headboard from Heals Leather and a wall covering of burlap, wool and silk by David Hicks. The bed covering is vintage, 1950s, and the Blocks linen basket was designed by Donna Wilson and made by the People of the Sun, a nonprofit based in Malawi.
The space is designed for easy indoor-outdoor access.
With the house often open to the outside, dust easily drifts in. Fortunately, the concrete floor, speckled with white aggregate mix, is easy to clean.
The master bedroom is defined on the north side by a series of indoor louvers, which allow the couple to frame and manage their views.
The master suite is a large space anchored by a custom-built "island" that holds the bed on one end and bathroom vanity on the other (see next slide).
“Since we didn’t want to push the whole house out to open up more space, I added a deck instead of altering the footprint,” says Juilland. The result, he says, is a cozy bedroom that doesn't feel confined.
The modest bedroom looks towards the yard and part of the owner’s garden. The table, by Jayson Home, holds a vintage lamp and is flanked by a Spring Lounge chair by Cappellini.
In a Manhattan Beach home, homeowner Matt Jacobson and architect Michael Lee designed the long steel-and-Ipe bench surrounding a square, concrete outdoor fire pit, which suspends from the low concrete wall in their outdoor space. Boudreau carried the same tile from the interior to the exterior, then created a seating area with a couch and chair from Rove Concepts, and coffee table and mirrors from Urban Outfitters.
Designed by José Guedes Cruz, César Marques, and Marco Marinho of the Portugal-based firm Guedes Cruz Architects, The Wall House is laid out in an open-box plan, and is fitted with plenty of glass windows to enhance the synergy between its interior and exterior spaces.
