The gallery has a new whitewashed pine roof that covers the main villa, which includes two one-bed suites and one of the property’s three and a half kitchens. “We think it was a little church before,” says architect Yashar Yektajo. The brick was stripped of plaster from a prior renovation. “It was completely rotten because there’s so much humidity here,” he adds. “Now the brick can breathe, and the whitewash brings it together.” Pinto, one of the couple’s two dogs, rests under a coffee table Ernesto and Ellen designed. The gallery is lined with original arches that lead to the courtyard.

“Each project has its own kind of story behind the brands we work with. We always try to work with a couple Mexican brands because of my background,” Carlos says. The dresser in the dining room, for example, is designed by Comité de Proyectos, a studio based out of Mexico City: “They do amazing work. I saw that piece with the ‘feet’ and I was like ‘I want that so bad.’ The pieces have names of women, so that one is called Carmen and it's part of a three piece collection.”

The family spends less time in the living room compared to the family room, so they wanted it to feel more eclectic and funky, similar to an art gallery. They selected a coffee table from Form (LA), a chair designed by Comite de Proyectos, and a rug from Nordic Knots—a company founded by a friend of Carlos’s from his time in Sweden.
