Illuminated against the forest, Barenhaus is an imposing rural surprise surrounding bucolic stone farmsteads.
“The idea was to replicate the way trees grow to look for light,” says Camilo.
Inside, the eye goes immediately to a floating staircase along one wall. Hand painted by local artist Tess Thomas, its wood treads add a pop of color within the voluminous great room.
Clad in a mix of stained cedar, Metal Sales corrugated siding, and James Hardie cement board, houses in The Village are arranged along winding paths intended to provide opportunities for neighbors to interact.
Colors Luiza chose for an exterior wall are reflected throughout the home, such as in the Brazilian green marble floors in the kitchen/living area, as well as built-in kitchen cabinetry, covered in Salmon Formica. Tito designed the dining table.
“The forest is practically inside,” says Danilo Taranti.
The Tarantis landscaped the entry with grass and trees.
A “bridge” connects the home’s two volumes. On either side of the bridge from the entry is an open-air patio planted with local grasses and shrubs.
The renovated apartment sits in a well-preserved residential tower from the 1970s, located in the city's historic Restelo neighborhood.
“He really understood that we wanted inside but outside space,” says one of the homeowners of Casa B, Federica de la Mora. “The house opens completely, so you’re both in the main dining room and outside. We like to have breakfast on terrace, so he made a special place where we have a lot of trees to have dining there. He uses nature as a complement to the house, but he doesn’t overwhelm the nature.”
Despite its small footprint, the flexible, multi-purpose space includes bike storage and a niche for storing weights.

There’s even a sense of play in the entryway: Bocci lights are installed in the layout of the Orion constellation.
This little nook beneath the Sky Room features a dreamy cloud mural: a snapshot of the sky painted pink and made into a custom wallpaper.
Getting the hammock installed posed a bit of a challenge. Adair and Kopp found it tough to find a company to help with executing their idea. “It’s interesting to know that if you want to do something with a little bit of risk, it really takes some convincing,” says Adair. With the help of a U.S.-based company that dealt with large-scale net facilities, they got a group together and lashed the whole perimeter to create a safe, sturdy, supportive weaving.
Adair and Kopp commissioned the metal fabricator who did the railings to create the monkey-bar rungs that line the hallway, powder-coated in seafoam green. Rings can attach to the monkey bars to give the boys a different type of challenge.
