Burke and Phelps requested that they each have their own private workspace. While Phelps’s office is on the first floor at the north end of the house, Burke’s office is a separate two-story space at the south end.
New York designer/artist Huy Bui decorated his home with a mishmash of curios, from 19th-century burlap sacks found at an antique fair to a plywood workbench he carved with a Festool plunge saw. The Max-A studio is also built with a pine frame, though it has pine panelling on the ceiling, while the main house ceiling is painted a warm white.
“For me, architecture is pragmatic yet joyful,” Andrew says. “The entrance cut away allows for a deep cantilevering overhang that gives shelter when it's raining, and the 1400mm-wide pivot door is pure theatrics.”
The millwork hides the bed and desk, but it also conceals the air conditioner. “Everything is integrated,” says Losada-Amor. “That’s what keeps it clean.” Even the garage door mechanism is hidden here.
“The studio is designed to give you vistas and sight lines across the whole garden,” Andrew says.
The glass walls frame large expanses of greenery.
Tucked away under the loft in this otherwise open space, the fireplace anchors a cozy nook.

In this Australian project, a resort-worthy swimming pool sits beside the industrial-chic kitchen and living area. It's a joy to swim in, of course, but the body of water also provides evaporative cooling for the courtyard.
Another money-saving choice was changing the driveway from a stone paver driveway to poured concrete. The roof is designed to collect rainwater, which travels through a set of pipes for storage in a 39,000-gallon cistern behind the house.
