Unsightly garbage is hidden behind cabinets. An Eames bird and a sculpture of glass and metal by artist Pino Cherchi add visual interest.

The exercise space contains ample storage and a convenient door for days when the couple wants to practice yoga outdoors. The blue Frank Gehry Left Twist Cube adds a pop of color to the space.

The bedroom offers the couple a relaxing place to unwind. “The headboard is a free-floating circular element, just like the center of the house,” Smith says. The home’s circular floor plan also means “not having any dark corners,” explains Smith.

The kitchen boasts maple wood, modern Radianz quartz countertops, along with a Pental tile backsplash and Moda Vetro Glass Stone tile. “The homeowners really wanted the space to glow and one of the best ways to do that is to keep the finishes light,” Smith said. Custom cabinets throughout the house were designed by the Artisans Group and built by Beech Tree Woodworks.

C Cúbica Architects designed the kitchen, keeping in mind that the family is health-conscious and enjoys entertaining at home. “We have an urban garden in the back that connects to the kitchen so they can get fresh herbs and take dishes directly to the dining room or the garden and pool,” says Cesarman. There’s also an electric curtain that can close off the kitchen from the living area when the family is entertaining.

“The challenge was to create a serene oasis in a buzzing, chaotic city,” says Cesarman. “The owners have a lot of pets—birds, dogs, and cats—and they wanted them to be able to walk freely in the house and in the garden.”

Glass sliding doors allow the living and dining areas to open up to the garden, so that the family can easily entertain. “The living room and dinning room are lined in wood to give them a warm feeling in contrast to the concrete floor and ceiling,” says Cesarman. The concrete wall features a chimney crafted of black granite for added visual interest.

In an effort to create an abundance of light and air flow throughout the space, the home follows an L-shaped floor plan that wraps around outdoor areas. “We designed several open spaces, each with a different feel: the garden and pool, the terrace, and the back patio,” says Cesarman. “The idea was to reduce the area to the most basic and essential [elements].”

Allison says the living room, which receives loads of natural light, is her favorite space in the house. “I love sitting on the sofa and looking out the window," she says. “It is a really special room and we hang out in there 90 percent of the time.”

In the bedroom designed for the couple’s daughter, the couple chose to mix old and new with Design Within Reach’s Min bed and a vintage cabinet from Flair New York.

The bedroom enjoys ample natural light, thanks to the windows on either side of the Charles Rogers bed. “We centered all our bedroom doors around the central hallway skylight,” says Allison. The painting is by Pat Diaz.

A vintage modular shelving unit makes a statement in the office.

“We opened the central bedroom to the dining room to create an office space,” says Allison. The nook highlights the gorgeous steel casement windows, which are original to the home.

When designing the kitchen, dining, and living areas, the couple knew they wanted to achieve a continuous flow between the different rooms.

The old kitchen was very small. The couple opted to enlarge the space, which now features salvaged cabinets that were updated with bold green paint. “It is a pop of color to contrast with everything else in the house,” says Allison. An island, crafted from an old architect’s desk, paired with vintage stools pull the look together.

White walls bring a sense of warmth to the living room, while furnishings like a Ligne Roset sofa and Eames Bent Plywood coffee table add a modern touch. A painting by Pat Diaz adorns the wall. “It was a pretty easy combination,” Allison says of blending her aesthetic with her husband’s taste. “I am more organic modern and he is more strict modern. Our style flows together.”

The master bedroom overlooks one of the oldest streets in Monnickendam. The Eames chair is from Herman Miller, and the custom headboard, covered in Indian silk, is by X+L Studio.

What remains of the original brick house can be seen on the right side of the structure, with the new master bedroom on top and living area on the left. A hot tub and seating area are accessible through the basement and living area.

The living room is anchored by a sofa and lounge chair, both by Børge Mogensen, as well as a Conoid bench by George Nakashima. An Isamu Noguchi pendant lamp casts a warm glow onto the Brasilia coffee table, designed by Claesson Koivisto Rune for Swedese.

In the living room, a sofa by Vico Magistretti is next to a plywood armchair by Gerald Summers. The coffee table is by Enzo Mari; the Cesta lantern is by Miguel Milá for Santa & Cole. “It’s too expected for us to put Hans Wegner here,” Duncanson explains.

In addition to a playroom, the children share a bathroom. “In a kids’ bathroom, it’s nice to have a little bit more fun,” Miller says. “The penny tiles are really nice because they are really inexpensive and have a nice blue delicateness to them.” A neutral palette of whites and grays is used throughout the rest of the space to make the blue penny tiles stand out. Footstools are nestled underneath the cabinets so the kids can access the sink easily.

In a renovated Tribeca loft, Eames shell chairs surround a Saarinen Tulip table from Knoll. The Line console is from Design Within Reach and the pendant light is Louis Poulsen's Snowball. While architect Matthew Miller of New York firm StudioLAB gutted the space, some of the original details—like the windows—remain. The rug is from ABC Home.

The loft pre-renovation was far from what the couple had in mind for their space. It featured an orange-colored oak floor and a tin ceiling, which was painted white for a fresh look.

The living area now feels open and bright and showcases the couple’s appreciation for furniture design and artwork. The family opted for a Camber sectional and rug from Design Within Reach, coffee table from Steven Alan Home, and replica Eames Lounge to outfit the space.

“We refaced some of the kitchen cabinets and altered the staircase a little bit,” Miller says. The new staircase features a design that accommodates storage for a microwave and pantry items. A warm wood dining table by Matthew Hilton and Profile chairs from Design Within Reach stand out against the white walls and pale flooring.

The previous layout felt like a maze with a ton of little rooms. With the new floor plan, each of the couple’s children has their own bedroom. The crib is by Oeuf.

StudioLAB built cabinets to hide the unsightly radiators in the master bedroom. “I hate to see radiators so I always build cabinets to cover them,” Miller says. The Hepburn bed is De La Espada and the nightstand is Design Within Reach.

The office nook, which was created out of a coat area, is the perfect setting to complete work assignments. “The residents have a bench that they can put things in and sit atop when taking shoes off and on,” Miller says.

In addition to housing storage, the staircase also hides pet food bowls.
