The home's rear is thoroughly modern. Blue bricks, salvaged from the preexisting building, are now the pavers in the entrance and patio.
This particular project, at 300 square feet, required some modification to meet building codes. Nevertheless, it took only a week and a half to build on site.
Located about 100 miles north of Toronto, the Bunkie overlooks the Lake of Bays and is adjacent to the client’s house. This Bunkie is clad in wood reclaimed from a barn. A patio extends outwards, enabling the client to exercise outdoors when weather permits.
This archetypal Swedish building form, shaped like a Monopoly house, serves as an artist’s studio, with a simple plywood interior and massive skylights to let in natural sunlight.
The studio occupies the corner of a backyard filled with carefully-tended plants. They positioned the studio at the yard’s far corner, diagonal from the main house’s back door, to create a path through the garden that would engage visitors in landscape.

The studio addition is part of a revamp that unifies buildings, canopies, and the courtyard. It was a three-year job for architect-owners Matt Wittman and Jody Estes, with many materials opportunistically salvaged.

Inside the studio lies a spacious, light-filled interior. It is the perfect place for Søren’s comedy shows, sketches, and music, but also provides a calm, pleasant space shared by the whole family. “Our kids enjoy being in there and playing or falling asleep on the floor as well,” says Lone.
"I see the Laura Desk in a study, a bedroom, or a den—small spaces to calm your mind at a simple workstation. I also see it in a front entryway, a loft, or in an open floorplan, where its form can be admired. I see it being used by people who desire something designed with intention and crafted with care. I see the Laura Desk being used and appreciated by a person who understands that the little things really do matter."

The hut was built on top of the bones of an existing pergola.
Light is controlled in the studio to facilitate the artist’s work. Half of the studio is flooded with northern light for traditional art forms such as sculpture and drawing, while the other half minimizes light to avoid screen glare for digital work.

The roofline of the Tind house prototype, designed by Claesson Koivisto Rune for prefab company Fiskarhedenvillan, has more conventional Swedish gables than the flat-roofed modernism of typical prefab units.
From the The Cherner Chair Company comes these two equisitely-crafted pieces: the Cherner Studio Task Chair ($1049) and the Cherner Studio Desk ($1999 to $2229). In addition to a wide variety of woods, the chair comes in an armless version while the table comes in two different sizes (48 or 60 inches wide).
Along with the 100 prototype clay sketches, Heath also chose a permanent candle holder design to join their collection of artisan pottery.
The living room is five steps down from the kitchen and office space and features textured black slate tile from Olympia Tile, Voyage Immobile sofas with Farniente collection upholstery (a wedding present from Flanders’s mother) by Roche Bobois, and a rug from Turkmenistan the couple picked up in Jerusalem. The sliding glass doors are by Loewen and the glazing above is by Inline Fiberglass. Sawatzky relied on Wayne Arsenault for the custom millwork and carpentry.
The building process was a collaborative one, with the Gambys and their architects engineering the house to meet building codes as the pieces were being installed. In the middle, a glass hallway containing the dining room connects to the kitchen.
The rear of the house features Victorian brick, a modern extension, and Velfac windows. Landscape designer Matthew Wright was inspired by the art of Henri Rousseau when choosing plants to set amid the garden’s Dorset pebbles.
