The kitchen color palette was influenced by the homeowners' love of early 20th-century paintings of domestic interiors, featuring deep hues in heavy traffic spaces, juxtaposed with lighter natural oak in the glass house.

Work It “We wanted to open up the back of the house, but there’s nothing to look at,” says Dana. “So we decided to put something in our yard as a focal point, to create our own view.” The architects came up with a glass-walled studio, which Dana uses as her home office. The architects mounted a steel I-beam that spans the yard, with holes drilled at eight-inch intervals for maximum flexibility of use. Playful wallpaper from Graham & Brown livens up the house’s otherwise staid powder room, which also contains a pint-size Ikea sink.

A former closet was transformed into a double-height library, complete with a reading nook and a rolling ladder from Spiral Stairs of America. “That’s my favorite part of the house,” says Dan. “When I see Stella reaching for a book, there’s nothing better.”

The living room features a well-loved staple of mid-century design: a conversation pit.

The deck, which wraps around the backyard's two conifers, is heated with a gas-burning fireplace.

In the primary bath, which includes the home’s only indoor shower, Lachapelle used plumbing fixtures and hardware with an oil-rubbed bronze finish that relate to the touches of black in the living space. The wood dowel and leather triangle towel holders are from Schoolhouse.

“They’re well-traveled New Englanders who had always lived in older, traditional homes,” Lane says of the clients. “They wanted a contemporary home with warmth, texture, and craft.”

The living room could feature a roaring fire as a focal point. The metalwork for the wood stove and venting cost about $13,000.

The pen shelving keeps the kitchen light and bright, which was the goal of its design. The kitchen and bath fixtures cost about $26,000.

The entryway features a wide window, which were all sourced from KBS Builders. The total, including glazing, cost $62,370.

Madison points out that the pod concept would make it easy to add an extension if necessary. “We see it as a house that can grow with us—and that we can pay for as we go along.”

A dumb waiter connects the pantry and parking area.

Stone elements on the first floor were sourced from the property.
