The MP-163 “Earth Chair”and matching footstool in light beige, and the S1 collection of armchairs, sofas, and tables, designed in 1975.
Surrounded by a wild apple orchard, the revamped 1800s residence is a slice of pastoral bliss, complete with a converted barn.
The gardens are home to drought tolerant, native, and mediterranean plants, including citrus trees.
In addition to plenty of floor-to-ceiling windows, clerestory windows dot the roofline.

David opens a window in the upstairs bathroom that looks down on the atrium.
A look at the bathroom. “The window also gives a view out to the front garden and lets the morning sun in,” says David.
The oak cabinet in the living room was another secondhand find. “It had the exact measurements of the wall,” says Annemie. “We just needed to hang it.” The throw blanket is from La Femme Garniture while the pillows and pendants are custom.
The view down from the bathroom window provides a closer look at the white and green pendants that Annemie made from glass found at a flea market. The doors and windows were crafted by carpenter Peeters Schrijnwerkerij, the side tables are custom, and the chair is a vintage find.
Annemie Lathouwers grew up in a forested enclave on the outskirts of Antwerp, Belgium. A nature preserve filled with stately pines, the area lured her back when she and her husband, David D’Hulst, began thinking about trading their house in the city for greener surroundings.
The new floors are also rift-sawn red oak and the living room has vintage pieces throughout, including seating and tables by Herman Miller and Knoll.
Uncovered paths lead straight down into the forest.
The hanging above the sofa is from M.A. Estudio, a Mexico-based collaborative project.
The project’s name, Loom House, is a nod to “weaving people and place,” says Karen. The couple hope their project contributes to spreading more awareness of the kind of systemic changes the LBC strives for. “With the Living Building Challenge, we liked that you not only create a healthy home,” says Todd, “but you consider how that healthy home is creating a healthy environment and community.”
The home’s two levels used to be connected only by an external staircase. The architects reorganized the floor plan to insert a new indoor stair, which is bordered by a screen of steel cables grounded in stones the couple collected on their beach. The columnar lantern is by Stefan Gulassa, a local artist who made many of the home’s light fixtures.
Hellstern designed the mohair sofa in the home's living area. The rug is by Tufenkian.
In the dining area, Cassina chairs hug a Henrybuilt table. The kitchen features a concrete counter by Ryan McPhail and an Elio faucet by Dornbracht.
The den provides a cozy seat by the fire. The original wood beams of the ceilings have aged to a golden brown. To match the hue, Powell has stained the wood used for cabinets, doors, molding, a built-in bed, and wainscoting.
In the guest bedroom, a Murphy bed from Resource Furniture is surrounded by custom cabinetry by Black Square Builders.

In the two bedrooms and the living room, custom built-in pieces below the windows creatively conceal the HVAC units while adding storage.

Rather than one pendant light, a smattering of little globe lights expand above the dining table. This way, the couple can have a small table-for-two or comfortably host a group without being focused under one centered pendant light.
