The residence is clad in a combination of vertical grain cedar, Firestone aluminum, and Corten standing-seam metal. The stone is Frontier Sandstone.
In October 2009, La Bodega, a winery and hotel operated by Rough Luxe Experience, opened its doors near the Spanish town of Palamos. The winery structure, designed by RCR Arquitectes, is defined by a sequence of parallel steel blades leaning diagonally backwards and sideways.

The gabions hold smooth rocks from the nearby San Luis Rey River; a fireplace feature is flanked by benches.
A custom rain-gutter system collects even slight amounts of precipitation in an underground cistern and distributes it to the yard. The Cor-Ten pivoting window is by Brian Linn of Vincent Designs.
The physical structure is integrated into the natural landscape, with a view of a permaculture vineyard in the background. All wine and produce served to visitors is grown on the estate, reflecting the Rough Luxe focus on provenance and authenticity.
RCR's inspiration from the steel blade sculptures of Richard Serra and layers of space and vegetation in traditional Japanese Zen gardens are evident in the winery they designed at La Bodega.
A outward-looking view from the interior of the winery that reflects RCR's architectural philosophy. They create buildings in reaction to existing features of the landscape and reveal new dimensions in the topography of the site. Relying upon steel, glass and other modern materials, they are concerned with the experience of light, shadow, earth, water and air.
Approaching the home from above, guests encounter a green roof that feels united with the landscape beyond. The entry sequence presents purposefully framed views that hide and reveal the lake.
“We sought to create a house that would not damage the environment and not be too visible,” says architect Tina Gregorič. A single zigzagging roof stretches over 5,380 square feet, doubling the area of the interior spaces and serving as an ideal spot for sunset cocktails and whale-watching.
The architects designed the large glass expanses in the dining and living areas so that their frames are hidden from view. “I love the way the light comes into the cabin and meets the curved surfaces of the walls and ceilings,” Bae Brandtzæg says. The kitchen’s custom cabinets were designed by Atelier Oslo and constructed by the contractor, Byggmester Bård Bredesen. The gas-powered stove, oven, and fridge are by VERA.
The west side is clad with six shutters made of horizontal, western red cedar slats that can be opened or closed with a single movement. "We wanted it to be able to feel cozy when needed," Oostenbruggen says.
When the shutters are closed, the house assumes an introverted character.

On the opposite side of the veneer wall, a coat closet helps act as a space divider, while defining the entryway. Frequent collaborators, MWAI describes their relationship with INTERIOR-iD as “more fun than work." The architecture team treated the home’s custom pieces as “building blocks” to help define and partition space, while serving critical and specific functions.

The oversized eaves provide protection from the elements and allow one to walk around the entire home in all weathers. Rain chains are used as decorative alternatives to downpipes.
Galvanized rain chains transport water off the roof. “Depending on how the exterior catches the light, it can appear almost metallic, or you can see the depth of the wood grain,” says Samantha.

A rain chain directs rainwater to a collection pit. A deep overhang, partly solid and partially open protects the window wall and dapples light across it.

The bedroom is located on a mezzanine just below the roof of a church. The minimal decor and simple arrangement of the room reflect the client’s modest tastes. The small pewter spotlights and pendant by Holloways of London connect to an exposed galvanized conduit that is set against the brick above the bed.
The master bedroom echoes the house’s black-and-white exterior and includes a custom-built storage unit that the architect designed for the space.
Open to the valley, the home lets the Shopes fully experience the seasons, even the sound of the Hudson River’s ice cracking in winter.
A green roof helps the home blend into the surrounding landscape, and a long skylight illuminates the kitchen below.
