The house is rotated just so to access views of both the lot as well as the ends of the adjoining lot. It’s a smart optical illusion that makes the land seem that much larger than it is.
The living area retains the home's original fireplace and masonry wall, with new sliding doors next to the kitchen that connect to the side yard. The sofa and side chair are from Ariake, the ottoman table from Hem, and the rug is from Hay.
“You can get a really nice cross-breeze,” says Debbi Gibbs of her home, situated to capitalize on its lakefront parcel. “If you open the sliding doors on both sides you really feel like the whole house is open.”
Sliding glass doors allow both sides of the bridge to be closed off as needed.
Another view of the living area shows how the space extends into the dining area and kitchen, both of which are sunlit by another wall of floor-to-ceiling windows.
The entrance to home is defined by two Foo dogs, which are feng shui symbols of protection—and these dogs also give the home its name. The board-formed concrete of the main living wing has been left as is, creating a play of constantly changing shadows. Over time, weather will naturally soften these joints, and the look of the home will subtly evolve.
