The family has been coming to Wanaka for decades. They bought the hanging metal sculpture in a local shop some 30 years ago. On the street-facing side (bottom, right), the roof folds down almost to the ground to protect the owners’ privacy.
The house has a standing-seam metal roof and is finished with black-tinted stucco and a standing-seam metal roof.
White painted fences define the parking area and entrance pathway to the house.
The exterior stone veneer around the base is built from Harris Stone and Hazelwood Ledge Stone.
"The roof of the lower level becomes the terrace of the upper level, with unobstructed views to the south," says principal architect Robert Swatt.

The unfinished cedar planks will develope a silvery patina over time.
Entrance
The master bedroom is enclosed on three sides, emphasizing the view outward, while the low-slung roof and deep eaves create a sense of horizontality. The bed, nightstands, and light shelf are made from white oak to match the floors; all were designed by the architects.

The design of this unique structure was oriented toward the exterior panoramic view.

For the farmhouse residence, the team has removed all the elements that did not have any significant heritage value. "Valuable historical constructions are thus brought into equilibrium with the scarcely added volumes," says Damiaan Vanhoutte, a co-founder of the firm.
For a cost-conscious 2,000-square-foot renovation located 30 minutes outside of Austin, Texas, architect Nick Deaver took a look around for inspiration. He spied galvanized metal cladding on the region’s sheds and co-opted the inexpensive, resilient material for his own design.
