Michael took that to the next level and gave us a place where we could barbecue on the roof.”

The front and back doors are only 12 feet apart from one another, separated by the living space at the heart of the home. The open floor plan allows the living space, den, dining room, and kitchen to flow into each other, while the way the volumes are positioned makes each space feel distinct—this works well for entertaining both large and small groups.

From the rooftop deck, the family can gain a different perspective on both the home and the city of Taipei. The car sunroof skylight, which overlooks the bathroom, is also visible. “We wanted the family that lives in the home to literally be able to touch the old heritage, and to have a relationship with the old rooftop,” says Chu. “The red ladder leads to a rooftop deck, which is adjacent to different roof tiles from various periods. You can enjoy your own piece of sky, touch the history of the building, and see the Taipei skyline in the background. It is a really unique place within Taipei–it is quiet and you have your own sense of space.”

Within the walls of this updated 1920s Spanish Colonial home is a world-class art collection that includes the work of James Turrell and Jenny Holzer. The abode was meant to contrast with the creative couple’s main residence in San Francisco—a Victorian on a steep hill. The Los Angeles getaway, designed by Síol Studios, was renovated to embody indoor/outdoor living while maintaining the original charm with beautiful bones and arched windows. The placement of the art was an organic process—some were designed in place, while others were placed afterwards such as the Barry McGee surfboards in the dining room.

At the client’s request the kitchen contains neither upper cabinets (Shino can’t reach them) nor an oven (they only used the old one once—to reheat a pizza). A modular Roche Bobois Mah Jong sofa adds a decorative flourish to the living area while maintaining as low a profile as the traditional Japanese furniture.

Designers Kathryn Heller and Kevin Short covered a 16-foot window wall in their San Francisco loft with custom curtains fabricated from 65 yards of block-printed fabric sourced from India. The curtains are motor-operated, and a black-out liner ensures good sleep in the bedroom upstairs. An additional sheer liner facilitates daytime light and privacy.
