A Seattle couple built their own backyard house with a city-sponsored design—and then rented out their old home on the property to friends.
Stones excavated during the foundation dig were redistributed to level out the yard while simultaneously creating a drainage curtain around the leach field.
The new dining room is large enough to host the neighbors and extended family, and has a Collier chandelier by Sean Lavin with built-in flexibility, so to speak. “That was selected because of its versatile nature,” says Robinson. “We wanted to have the ability for them to have a bigger or smaller table, and not necessarily be sitting directly beneath one chandelier that defined a specific place.”

There’s the option to rent out the top floor, but it also makes a great place for family visiting from Europe to stay.

Riffing on local farmhouses, architects Patrick Walker and Elizabeth Demetriades covered the 4,000-square-foot house in rough-sawn red cedar and capped it with a standing-seam galvalume roof.

Much of the home’s exterior was preserved. The siding is painted Benjamin Moore “Dolphin,” and the trim is Benjamin Moore “Mopboard Black.”
An artist by trade, and gardener by passion, Allison Paschke commissioned Providence-based architecture firm 3SIXØ to build a modest cottage that would allow her to reconnect with nature. She landscaped the home’s lush gardens herself.
The couple added curved cabinetry and a window seat to form a breakfast nook, painted in Farrow & Ball Red Earth. The table is discontinued from Anthropologie, where Kara previously worked as a display coordinator, and the overhead light is the Lambert & Fils Waldorf Double.
Matthew and Holly opened up the foyer and kept the exposed framing in place to speak to the house’s history. The figurine on the newel post is not original to the house, but a vintage replacement found online and rewired by Matthew.
