The architects were mindful to include materials like teak and travertine that would hold up against the strong Southern California sun.
In the Izquierdos’ living room, the slipcovered sofas were designed by Cristián based on specifications by his wife, Maida. The rug was made by a Chilean artisan whom the couple met on a trip, and the Anna XXL armchairs by Crassevig were a wedding gift.
On the top level, the interlocking oak panels lining the ceiling come together to create a delicate chandelier-like structure beneath one of the skylights.
Artwork by Octavia Tomyn adorns the living room, where Huggy faux-shearling chairs flank a Chub coffee table, both designed by Sarah Ellison. A neutral rug from Nikau ties the pieces together. The artwork is by Octavia Tomyn.
“On the first floor, we decided to open the cabins up to views with a floor-to-ceiling window that connects the living area to the sea,” explains Felipe Croxatto. “In the second-floor bedroom, we frame select views through smaller windows.”
The sunken living room features a built-in sofa and loveseat.

Architect Nic Brunsdon renovated an original heritage cottage for a young family in the suburbs of Perth, Australia. The 3,229-square-foot home includes a sunken “garden room” with large sliding doors that connect the interior gathering space to a sunny green courtyard.

The Kinuta N–SS01 bookshelf is inspired by umbrella and shoe racks near the entrances of Japanese temples and Shrines.
“When you get light filtered through the trees, there’s no better way to wake up or move through your day,” Krista adds.

The owners’ main living area has two stories with a master bedroom, which can be accessed by a rolling door, and porches on either end of the structure. “This large, barn-like building, with its moveable bedroom wall and office, allows the house to be both intimate and social, effortlessly accommodating guests or individuals alike,” Flato says.
“Exposing the craft and detail of the materials was a key part of the design,” Flato notes. The texture of the house, he says, can be observed in the concrete retaining wall for the lap pool.

A pivot door is one of the home’s unique features. "It’s meant to be more seamless as far as coming in and out. There’s drama in the way it hinges and in the scale of the door," says architect Peter Liang.
"They wanted the house to patina and grow with them," says Bryan Bethem of the clients. "It will change from year to year as the wood weathers and ages. It will grow along with the family."
The house has many spaces for recreation and relaxation, such as a garage converted to a play space and art studio and this patio off the living room.
