In the kitchen, the countertops and backsplash are Pietra Cardosa stone and the cabinetry is whitened maple and an ebony-stained charcoal oak, to sync with the rest of the case goods throughout the home.
Inspired by the textured brick in the adjacent properties in the neighborhood, a Victorian terrace house in Northeast England is updated with an addition that mirrors the surrounding architecture. Using the same local, handmade brick already in the home, Studio Ben Allen set out to convert the rear of the house into an airy work, dining, and storage space that fused seamlessly with the existing home. However, the addition also received a distinguishing characteristic—an arched, load-bearing roof.
Even the renovated bathrooms maintain the arched motif with arched mirrors above solid, uncoated brass hardware that will patina over time.
All the kitchen cabinets and appliances are consolidated into one island. Both the island and light fixture were designed by Berman Horn Studio. The countertop is by Abet Laminati.
The pantry provides more storage and allows clutter or small appliances to be stashed away.
A custom arch mirror in brass from Pop & Scott makes an eye-catching statement in the new bathroom. “The introduction of a curve was very important to break up all the lines and soften the bathroom space,” says Harry.
When creative director Martin Ringqvist and his wife, My, a teacher, moved back to Sweden after a year in Los Angeles, they wanted an authentic, warm space to live in with their two children. The kitchen’s matte-black Vipp system is paired with an antique white ceramic tile stove that was typical in the late 19th century. Although it’s not operable, the stove is used by the couple as a staging ground for illuminated candles and a storage space for an iPad that controls the home’s sound system.
Across from the sofa area is a linen-wrapped game table for casual gatherings.
This colorful terrazzo makes a bold statement against the all-white cabinetry.
Furniture is now placed within the confines of the platform to create a defined seating area.
