During the renovation, they discovered a window on the north side of the kitchen and built some shelving in front of it to enjoy storage while still letting the light in.

A custom door fabricated by Maple Key with Weitzner wallcovering now tucks behind the closet storage. A natural stone slab tops the custom oak vanity, and the floor tile is by Fireclay.

Boy Boy fabricated the framing for the flue shroud and base, which was then finished with plaster, and given a limestone benchtop. The Arto Ceramic tile extends into the kitchen, which has a preserved wood ceiling with new skylights.
The 1958 home in Southwest Portland has an unassuming cedar-shingled exterior.
Concrete and travertine slabs were installed on the exterior, alongside an ipe deck with mahogany railings.
Project architects Studio Marshall Blecher and Jan Henrik Jansen Arkitekter opened up the center of the house, previously comprising a maze of fourteen small rooms, creating one large and airy kitchen and dining space with a high, chapel like ceiling. A six-meter-long concrete plinth standing at the center of the room which doubles as an island bench and dining table, had to be lowered into the house by a crane while the roof was being reconstructed.

In the living/dining area, rough-sawn wood-plank screens cover a wall of windows. The removable panels keep the space cool in summer but are taken down the rest of the year so that the sun can heat the interior. The dining table is from Restoration Hardware and the wood chairs from Barnaby.
In an upstairs bedroom, glass panels offer views of the sky. The sconce is from Schoolhouse Electric, and the blanket is from Pendleton.

Maria Milans del Bosch’s Catskills home is attuned to the changing seasons. Sunlight pours into the double-height living room, where a Stûv fireplace and radiant floors keep the space warm in winter.
Beside a simple but spacious kitchen, the living area is meant to be warm and casual.
With the doors and sliding glass wall both open, the home takes advantage of the breeze to remain cool.
A cast-iron tub from Signature Hardware sits beneath a large window; the unlacquered brass faucet is from Waterworks.
The primary bath includes double sinks, a freestanding tub with jets, and a walk-in rain shower.
“The enormous kitchen includes 20-foot vaulted ceilings with massive hand-hewn beams, radiant polished concrete floors, and a soaring ‘curtain wall’ of glass and steel,” says the listing agent.
“The wall's latticed steelwork was hand-bathed in acid over many months to achieve its uniquely rich patina, as was the floor-to-ceiling, sculptural steel tower opposite with built-in wood burning pizza oven at its base,” says the listing agent.
Beneath the postcard-like backdrop of La Concha mountain, a previously abandoned Spanish villa received a modernist revamp for a couple and their young child. Architecture and landscape firm LMNL breathed new life into a dilapidated 1840 Dutch dwelling by preserving the home’s historic facade while completely gutting the interior. The kitchen became the nucleus of the home, with ample storage and a marble-clad island, connected fluidly to a newly landscaped garden.
The renovation included an additional bathroom, to round out the total to two.
Moseley notes the home’s distinctive staircase as one of her favorite features. "When the steel was ordered from the steelyard," she says, "it was marked with our metalworker’s name, for easy pickup. That scribble still exists in random places in the staircase and is very industrial—we love it!" Hand-welded by Mike Carman, a local contractor, the staircase runs through all three floors, and it was custom-sized to fit the dimensions of the shipping containers, measuring nine-feet-six-inches tall and eight-feet wide.
Architect Francesco Librizzi built the staircase for the Casa G project as a means to slow the ascent, to create stations that infused the interior with life.
A striking stair defines the entry to the house; it features minimalist floating timber stair treads wrapped around a woven steel mesh blade wall.
