The guest room doubles as a home office. Here, too, are cypress built-ins framing glass panels that look out onto the sea. The architects call them "St. Jerome boxes," which is inspired by the classic image of St. Jerome at his desk, lost in thought, with the landscape framed in a picture window beside him.

"For most people, the letters and numbers do not jump around on the page and the colors remain the same— it is simply a break-down in communication between the eye and the brain. For most people, one can see the information, one can see perfectly each and every letter form, but there is something in one's mind that is stopping or slowing the process of information. For most, this is dyslexia." — graphic designer Daniel Britton, who created a special font to help educate people and raise awareness about dyslexia, the most common learning disability. www.danielbritton.info

Tasked with creating a multi-use guest pavilion on a relatively small Northern California vineyard lot that could also host sit down dinners for up to 60 people, designers at Anderson Architects started by asking the key questions: “Where should it be within the property?” “How much floor area do we need for a 60 person dinner?” “How much volume do we need for a basketball court?” “We also always tell ourselves to look at the landscape first, let it dominate and lead it through. The building took the form of a large Napa Valley barn.
