San Francisco–based Michael Hennessey Architecture paid homage to Eichler's affinity for open spaces by reconfiguring the living area on the upper floor and moving the kitchen to organically connect the rooms.
“The new house is not shy to look across at the old house, where you can see old rough stucco on one building, and then the same stucco on our new building,” Jones says.
Their son's bedroom features skillful use of ordinary birch-finished shelves from Ikea. The 1950s fiberglass shell chair is from Modernica.
All of the apartment’s fixtures are by Kohler, including the kitchen sink and faucet as well as the Tea-for-Two bathtub, Vox square sink, and Catalan mirror in the bathroom. The Thassos marble subway tile is by Ann Sacks.
The third hut, by Muji's head design consultant and revered product designer Naoto Fukasawa, is made primarily of timber. Ideal for an outdoor retreat, it features a pitched roof and an expansive wall of glass.
