The dining and living space are a few steps down from the rest of the house, creating a wider volume for these public areas.
The home is a beautiful, glowing jewel on the alpine landscape.
The back garden easement was originally a cartway for coal deliveries. “The cobblestones add a timeless element,” says Maureen.
Client, Marianne, and architect, Binke Lendhardt, one of the founders of Crossboundaries, met in Beijing 15 years ago through mutual friends. When she bought the boat, Marianne wanted to bridge Eastern and Western concepts of design and so approached Crossboundaries. In keeping with this approach, the boat is named Fàng Sōng 放松—which translates from Chinese into “Relax!”—representing a link to Marianne’s life and experiences in China.
That’s how Milla Novo and her husband, Nigel Nowotarski, came to live in the top of what was once a chapel. As you step into their apartment, large arched windows hint at its ecclesiastical past, but the couple’s eye-catching textiles and artworks—set against pristine white walls—make the biggest impression.
This three-level studio shows Frank Gehry’s practical side, while still leaving room for fun.
Large format, 12-inch white oak floors help highlight and dramatize the scale of the apartment. “At the width we selected, you see such a beautiful grain expression,” says architect Max Worrell.
The black perforated steel staircase allows light to flow throughout the home while retaining some of the home's industrial past.
While the new facade is swathed in black stucco, it maintains elements of the original carriage house, which is hidden within the wall. Beyond the grounding stucco base, Healey designed two white volumes to be seen above, teasing the idea that more exists beyond the entry point.
"The sunlit formal living room features an inviting bay window with custom banquette seating," says the listing agent. "The living room and dining room have triple-hung windows that open onto the large piazza and overlook the pool."

Clad in cypress and charged with color, the North Fork getaway of author Julie Satow and editor Stuart Elliott is something to write home about.
Designed as an experiential retreated for the Henrybuilt team, founder and CEO Scott Hudson explains, "We had the idea to stop doing showrooms and to start doing houses that our staff can travel to, and live in, and actually live with the product and learn by experiencing it how to improve it."
Walls at a narrow hall were replaced with wood and bronze framed glazed partitions.

Kim Moellenberndt and Ryan Tyner found their future home at a corner store built in the 1940s. The deal started with a handshake deal between the couple of the store's owner.
A striking example of adaptive reuse, the three-bedroom home designed by local firm C2 Architecture comes with 15-foot-tall ceilings, handcrafted millwork, and multiple private patios.
The large blue barn door, mimicked by the garage doors, is an hommage to the family home, which also has big sliding storm doors.
The original Doug fir floors were revealed, cleaned, and refinished, as were the crossbeams at the ceiling.
