Founded in 1979 by Jan Kaplický (who died in January 2009), this London-based architecture and design practice gained fame for its high-tech bionic architecture. Incorporating organic shapes and natural forms into its structures, the firm transformed British institutions—constructing the UFO-esque media center at Lord’s Cricket Ground and covering the Selfridges department store’s Birmingham branch with 15,000 aluminum discs—into ultramodern landmarks.
