  • Brooklyn Slate
    @brooklynslate
    Brooklyn Slate Company is a collaborative effort from Brooklyn graphic designer Sean Tice and Parsons graduate student Kristy Hadeka. After visiting Hadeka's family slate quarry in upstate New York in the spring of 2009, the two grabbed a few pieces for use as all-purpose boards back home in Brooklyn. They found a number of purposes for the slate such as trivets for tea kettles and hot dishes to coasters for beers, and they began gifting pieces to friends. The response was so overwhelmingly positive that the two struck out to produce a line of slate products forming Brooklyn Slate Company.

    @mks_design
    MKS design is a modern furniture and housewares design firm established in 1998. It has produced distinctive and elegant furniture including chairs, stools, couches, configurable theater seating, modular storage, tables large and small, sideboards and bars, as well as an ever-evolving line of housewares—both production and one-off—coasters, trivets, tableware, serving utensils, and professional kitchen cutlery. The mission of MKS Design is to create furnishings that embody a design ethic focused on our emotional experience of the things which surround us, while silently supported by a robust and rigorous technical and intellectual backbone. Our work is meant to be authentic in the sense of being genuine and original, courageous, and proud yet not self-conscious. We aim to create beauty through an honest mix of fact, function, wit, and whimsy, and the maintenance of an uncompromising and meticulous attention to detail. The work is predominately, but not exclusively in metal, and emphasis is on original design.

    ABOUTFor nine years I worked at jack spade creating a wide range of items—bags and accessories, books and stationery, flyswatters and ping pong paddle covers. I left in February of 2009 and began my own line, a small collection of everyday items for men & women. My line consists of four bag shapes, two shirt styles and an assortment of accessories (belts, bookmarks, coasters, ashtrays, stationery, lighter covers, keyfobs, a pencil case, and a travel-sized backgammon set). The button-down shirts and sturdy canvas bags draw inspiration from materials that improve with age—two-ply cotton oxford shirting and heavy cotton canvas. These straightforward shapes employ superior natural materials and thoughtful construction. LABEL My label features the nine planets of our solar system with the Sun (as a tetherball) in the center. Leading scientists announced recently that Pluto no longer qualifies as a planet, so technically there should only be eight planets and the Sun, but I have a soft spot for Pluto so it has remained on the label.
  • Xenia Taler
    @xenia_taler
    THE MAKERS Who: Partners Xenia Taler and Steven Koblinsky. Xenia designs the tiles, Steven crafts the clay and glazes. Where: In their Toronto studio. When: Since 1996. How: Tiles are pressed in molds made of wood, or extruded. Glazes are mixed from scratch. All tiles are decorated by hand. Why: Because we hope that one day, a long, long time from now, not only will your children fight mercilessly over the wonderful tiles you had so wisely purchased, but even when humankind is forced to venture off this world and fend amongst the stars, those tiles will be the second or third item on a strict ten item list which your descendents feel they must take along with them on their arduous journey. THE TILES We make two kinds of tiles:Our wall hanging tiles come with a groove in the back for hanging as well as cork on the bottom and glazed sides. They are suited to withstand heat and can be used as coasters and trivets. Our installation tiles are thinner and have unglazed sides for grouting. Applications include kitchens, bathrooms, fireplaces and tabletops. Either thin or thick tile can be used for installation but it is better to order the thinner tiles with unglazed sides if you are definitely planning on installing them. To order our thinner tiles, please see our Installation Tile section. CARE Most soaps and detergents are fine to use. Avoid acidic or abrasive cleaners. Also avoid children with permanent markers. (Seriously, the marker die will seep into the crackle.)

    Split Enz Hair salon Greymouth I was quite impressed with my experience with Split Enz hair salon in Greymouth when I went for a haircut sometime in October 2019. I enjoyed the chit chat from the lady who was cutting my hair. She gave me her full attention during my visit not that I would have minded because someone had to tend to the counter each time a customer came in. Split Enz is on the corner of Tainui and Guinness Street; so well hidden that you would not know it exists if you are a visitor to the town driving around looking for a place to get a haircut. Easiest way to find Split Enz is to go to the Unichem Pharmacy and ask for directions. Split Enz are open at 8 or 8.30am and close at 5pm but Wednesday and Thursday nights are late closing days with the salon closing at 7PM. On Saturday, it is open from 9AM to 1PM. Greymouth is the largest town on the South Island's West Coast with a population of around 11,000; it has some of the world's most stunning scenery. The town is the commercial centre of the West Coast with buses and trains arriving and departing from the train station. The Tranzalpine Express between Christchurch and Greymouth is rated as one of the world's great train journeys and takes in some spectacular scenery. The train leaves Christchurch in the morning and makes a return journey in the afternoon. Greymouth has all of the amenities of any similar sized town, with the public library in Albert Street providing free internet service, not to mention the best selection of books on the West Coast. The leisure centre at High Street is the best on the Coast. Greymouth has more than its fair share of cafes; if you are into fast food, McDonalds and KFC are by the roundabout at the bottom end of Tainui Street. Then there are two or three along Mackay Street, one of these is Robert Harris which is just down from the train station. There is also a Subways near the train Station. The town has a good variety of department stores such as The Warehouse, Noel Leeming, and others. If you have not been to Greymouth for years, the town has certainly had a makeover so why not pay us a visit, you will not be disappointed. About this article Bob Stewart is a third generation West Coaster who has live near Greymouth all his life. In this article he discusses his experience at one of the local hairdressers. He has his own website which is totally unrelated to this article; it is http://www.robertastewart.com
  • Vance Waterhouse
    @vancewaterhouse
    Hi, I am Vance Waterhouse, a 29-year-old ex-baseball batter who became a passionate sports bettor and a blog writer. My home has always been in sunny California so that may be the reason why I denied a more than generous offer to start playing for the White Sox right after college. I couldn’t take all that wind and rain. Instead of making a career in baseball, I decided to relax for some time until I figure out what to do with my life. I didn’t want to make any rash or forced decisions. Instead, I decided to do whatever comes naturally. Since I’ve got sports in my blood, I started getting into sports betting. As Economics was one of my majors, it wasn’t hard for me to work out the odds. The more I learned, the more fascinated I was with a variety of systems and schemes you can apply when betting. That’s how I came to legendary Billy Walters, one of the greatest gamblers ever. Billy’s dedicated his whole life to sports betting which turned his life into a wild roller coaster ride from soaring success to depths of despair. His sports betting career encouraged me to step into the world of betting on sports. Aside from my favorite sport, i.e., baseball, I started following the NBA, NFL, and horseracing. I soon realized that I could share my knowledge and experience with other sports lovers who would like to make some money betting. So I started writing a sports betting blog, and the number of followers started rising when people realized my tips were for real. Writing is something I dedicate a lot of time and energy to nowadays. My latest project that I’m proud about is a blog about Billy Walters, his life, and his gambling adventures. I think that is the least I can do for a man I admire so much. I recommend you to check it out because you can learn something from Billy’s story even if you are not a fan of sports betting. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask. You can find me at 79 Denver Avenue Moreno Valley, CA 92553.
