The aim of this information is to help people identify asbestos products in their homes or offices in order to ensure their safety during the removal of asbestos products.
Asbestos Health Dangers and Diseases:
Asbestos can affect the health dangerously in various ways by causing different diseases. These includes:
1. Asbestosis:
Inhaling asbestos fibers can create an accumulation of scar-like tissues in the lungs known as asbestosis. This disease is characterized by a chronic inflammation and tissue scarring of the lungs. Asbestosis can be treated but not cured through the use of therapies like breathing treatments, medication and surgery.
2. Mesothelioma:
Asbestos fibers can cause Mesothelioma when inhaled. Mesothelioma is an aggressive disease that develops from the thin layer of the tissue covering the internal organs. Mesothelioma can be treated with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Although these therapies can extend the life of a patient and reduce symptoms, they cannot cure the condition.
3. Pleural Thickening:
Pleural thickening is a condition which arises from widespread scarring which thickens the thin membrane covering the lungs. The symptoms are chest pain and reduction in breathing. This disease can only be treated and not cured. However there are several useful therapies for the treatment of the disease.
Asbestos Statistics:
According to World Health Organization, about 125 million people are exposed to asbestos in their places of work. These category of people includes, General Industry Workers, Construction Workers, Home Interior Decorators among others. According to a report by WHO 107,000 deaths occurred worldwide due to exposure to asbestos in the year 2004. In the UK, 431 deaths resulting from asbestosis were reported in the year 2014 and 2515 deaths due to mesothelioma. In the United States over 31,000 people died from mesothelioma between 1999 and 2010.
As regards Asbestos Survival, according to research, 40 percent of people suffering from mesothelioma will survive at least one year after treatment commences, the survival rate declines as the years go by.
