Sister Bernie Kenny founded this initiative as a leading example of rural healthcare innovation in the United States, mainly serving Virginia's underserved communities. St. Mary's Health Wagon is a comprehensive network that sets the nationwide standard for rural health delivery.
Originally a mobile clinic, Health Wagon has expanded to include two stationary clinics, four mobile units, a full-service pharmacy, and an advanced dental facility. In 2024 alone, it facilitated nearly 29,000 patient encounters, emphasizing its essential role as a healthcare lifeline for southwestern Virginia’s most vulnerable populations.
Operating in a region that exemplifies America's stark healthcare disparities, Health Wagon addresses the significant life expectancy gap between Virginia's wealthier northern regions and its impoverished Appalachian areas, which can exceed ten years. This disparity underscores the critical need for accessible, quality healthcare, which Health Wagon strives to provide.
Health Wagon has been at the forefront of several healthcare innovations. In 2015, it participated in the first FAA-approved drone delivery of medication in the U.S., a feat now commemorated in the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum. It was also the first mobile clinic to implement SpaceX's Starlink program, providing satellite-enabled telehealth services in remote areas.
The organization’s commitment to innovation extends to establishing Virginia’s first remote wound care clinic and developing comprehensive post-COVID care programs. In collaboration with the University of Virginia, Health Wagon facilitated the world's first remote cystoscopy procedures for bladder cancer detection, demonstrating how technology can bring specialized care to rural settings.
Since 2016, Health Wagon has partnered with the Department of Defense to offer free medical, dental, and vision services, setting a precedent for military-civilian healthcare collaborations.
