A double-height space encompasses the kitchen, dining and living area, and features 36-feet-wide glass doors that pocket into southern and northern walls.

The renovation, which focused on the living-dining-kitchen area, strikes a balance between intimate and inviting, hence the project's name, the Open/Private apartment.

Running alongside the home is a stretch of grass, the "obvious place" for the pool during initial planning. The client, however, opted to keep the space open as a miniature soccer field for her son.

An enthusiastic cook, Miller says she can easily work in the galley-style kitchen. The reclaimed-wood surround echoes the exterior cladding.

The Floating Farmhouse’s semitransparent addition has a roofline that matches the pitch of the original 1820s farmhouse. A porch, tucked under the side eaves, is cantilevered over a stream that runs through the property. Ikea loungers are illuminated from the interior by commercial gymnasium lights repurposed as pendant lamps.

Studioverket (Stockholm, Sweden) This former strip club got a hip renovation by designers Per & Toki, featuring air bubble-patterned concrete walls and hanging gardens. The dark and shady entrance now leads to a light-infused workspace and music studio.

The new volume houses the dining area, which includes stairs to the bedrooms. The table is from Blake Avenue and the walnut chairs are from Room & Board. “You don’t want bright colors to take away from that relationship between the interior and the exterior,” Walker says.

Glass windows wall in the open-concept kitchen-dining spaces of the Sunrise House while glass doors open the spaces out into the garden beyond.

A 500-square-foot outdoor space with a grill, a table, and a hammock sits just off the entrance level of the townhouse, offering extra room for dining, relaxing, and entertaining. The corner couch is a custom piece inspired by the large cushions of Moroccan sofas. The Fermob table is paired with Hay Hee dining chairs by Hay.

The living room and dining room were originally separated by a central fireplace, which interior designer Nicole Hollis removed to create this great room. She installed a modern, custom eight-foot-long open gas fireplace in the living room, equipped with sensors that automatically turn it off when someone gets too near to the flames.

A vintage stool, a design that once was a staple of Greek classrooms, is tucked under the office desk on a landing leading to a balcony. The visual theme of the vertical wooden slats repeats itself here, including on a closet door. “They have no handles,” Ritenour says of the closet doors. “The lines are the door handles; you have to know to grab them.”

The area includes a Wally planter from Woolly Pocket near the custom steel-and-glass doors.

The bed folds vertically into the wall to open up the living space for lounging or entertaining.

The option of having an extra bedroom for their growing family was an attractive one for Scholz and Preskill as they looked to expand the living area of their cozy home. In doing so, they found themselves “cramming a full program into not that much space,” says Scholz. To achieve this, and still maintain a sense of fluidity and openness, the new master bedroom and bathroom were designed as a nontraditional open-concept space, without a continuous dividing wall between them. The light, airy bedroom features a custom LW bed and wall-hung side tables, both by San Francisco-based OHIO Design, along with a steel-and-white-oak lamp by Rich Brilliant & Willing.

A small country road borders the property to the west.

The open-plan living spaces act like a “giant kitchen” that invites guests to mingle throughout the house. The white rug anchors the living room furniture, which includes two red couches from Room and Board and a coffee table and end tables that were thrift-store finds. Roberston opted for commercial storefront doors over sliding glass ones for the back of the house. "It's the least expensive way to get a wall of glass," he says. The only drawback: The doors automatically lock when they close so Freeman and Feldmann have to be sure to always have keys on hand.

A long, low credenza in the living room keeps the space feeling open and airy.

Dinner on Wheels“As you can see in my own architecture, the indoors and outdoors are very connected. So, when I’m home, if the weather is good, I’ll open all the windows so it’s one continuous space.” The dining table, custom made by De Smedt’s friend Gilles van der Brempt, is on wheels so it can be moved out to the terrace. Ikea Urban chairs and Hee Welling’s dining chairs for Hay share the room with two bright-green vintage deck chairs, purchased at Brocéliande in Brussels.
