TriScale Compact Folding Digital Scale by Joseph Joseph, $30 Cycle between weighing your ingredients in fluid ounces, grams, pounds, and millimeters, all displayed on an LCD screen. An integrated tare function deducts the weight of a container from the gross weight of what’s on the scale. When you’re finished cooking, it folds up to fit in a kitchen drawer.

Smart Body Analyzer by Withings, $150 Weight alone isn’t a sufficient metric for gauging health. This scale will tell you your body fat percentage and heart rate—and can even detect carbon dioxide. Sync the data to the Withings Health Mate app to create a full health profile.

The scale will handle up to 11 pounds of foodstuffs. The top is glass, so it can be wiped down clean after weigh-ins. It has a kitchen timer built in as well.

U.K. design firm Koto’s proof of concept for their new venture in architect-designed modular residences is in North Uist, an island in the remote Outer Hebrides of Scotland. The roughly 2,200-square-foot, four-bedroom home carries the company’s characteristic sculptural forms, jet-black yakisugi cladding, and Japandi aesthetic.

From the Central Pavilion: The architect Juan Herreros materialize the theme of the Biennale through large scale technical documents of constructive details, facade cross-sections, and abstracted models of unmentioned projects, in order to illustrate his idea of Common Ground in current architectural practice, in which technique acts as an amalgam of diverse disciplines and where the architect is no longer a conductor but a member of a multi-polar, interdisciplinary team, also enriched by those who occupy and share the building.

If you have a family recipe or cookbook, however, the Drop scale is, as of now, not much use. It can operate as a standard kitchen scale, but to work correctly, it is entirely dependent on the recipes in the proprietary app. However, the company is toying with a system that would let bakers share recipes.

Once it’s zeroed with a mixing bowl, Drop notices when you’ve added the flour, brown sugar, or eggs and proceeds to the next step.

The app has a database of approximately 8,000 different food items. Tell it what you’re eating, weigh it, and you get a calorie estimation and a log entry.

The silicone rubber surface on the top can withstand the heat from a pot of boiling water, and the battery lasts a year between replacement.

Breen chose large-scale Stepstone pavers that are 60 inches long, the biggest size the company provides. Stepstone also offers the pavers in 12 standard colors for a uniform finish when paired with other products.

The cabins have a uniform sculptural look that the clients dubbed "Heritage Modern."

The resulting app and accompanying scale start with a recipe and serving size and then walk through the instructions as you add each component.

Scale was an important design factor. "We wanted it to be flexible," Laurie says. "It's scaled down for a child but is also tall enough so an adult can walk in it." The height between the floor of the lower platform and its ceiling is six feet—so taller adults do still need to duck slightly, but most can make it through. "Kids are small for a very short time and then they grow up and go to college and you're left with this structure," she says. "We wanted it to have a use after they're gone." Kellogg spent five years working on the house, and the structure was completed in 1993.

The couple finished the exterior siding with shingles made of Hardie board and painted a deep purple. "We wanted an exterior cladding that was durable, low-maintenance, and relatively DIY-friendly," says Michael. "When looking at our options at the local hardware store, the fish-scale shape popped because it was unique, quirky, and not super serious—and yet could create a contemporary look through uniformly using it with woven corners and minimal detailing."
