The Colosseum

Gladiatorial combat, animal hunts, simulated naval battles: what bloodthirsty and testosterone-fueled event didn’t go down at Rome’s Colosseum back in the day? Completed in 80 AD under the Roman emperor Titus, the three-tiered Colosseum stood 157 feet tall, featured 80 entrances and seated roughly 50,000 people. It’s still considered to be one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and engineering, but it wasn’t for the faint of heart. During one seven-day festival in 240 AD, 2,000 gladiators, 70 lions, 40 wild horses, 30 elephants, 30 leopards, 20 wild donkeys, 19 giraffes, 10 elk, 10 hyenas, 10 tigers, one hippopotamus and one rhinoceros all died. By the time the Colosseum closed in 523 AD, it’s estimated that more than one million animals and more than 500,000 people had perished there. Photo by: lightmatter

A simple cylinder meets unexpected detail with the World Desk Clock from Korean–based design firm 11+. Although the clock maintains the typical function of a clock—displaying the time—the World Clock takes it a step further. The exterior of the clock is inscribed with names of different international cities, including New York, Santiago, Aukland, Paris, and more. All 24 different time zones can be displayed, thanks to the distinctive rolling mechanism of the clock.

The playful aesthetics of Austin Maynard Architects have once again breathed new life into aging building stock—this time with the transformation of a dark and narrow terrace in Melbourne into an open and light-filled home fitted out with sustainable features. Upstairs, the "parents’ retreat" includes a centrally located bathroom "box," seen on the left of the image. The bright orange walkway is perforated to let natural light pass through.

Buckner takes time out for the newspaper and a cup of tea in a lounge off of the couple’s bedroom. The bedroom, which sits within the cantilevered section of the house, was at one time a covered deck. The storage units are from a later renovation, but Buckner, who has expert knowledge of all of the original MHA homes, surmises that “something very similar” would have been in its place.

Initially, the idea was to seed the planter below the oculus with native grasses and shrubs, adding to the dwelling’s connection to the landscape. “Instead, the owners came up with a brilliant idea of placing a stone cairn there that will grow over time by inviting visitors to add a stone with each visit,” explains architect Hunter Gundersen. “Again, the owner wanted this special place to be all about time and connection.”
