The marriage of interior and exterior, combined with meticulously conceived details and a restricted material palette, provide a continuous thematic quality throughout the project.

The house’s dominant gable form repeats at a smaller scale throughout the dwelling, as in the kitchen’s plywood and steel cabinets. “The gable became thematic throughout the process,” Maynard explains. “Whenever issues arose, we referred back to it as a default, rather than adding a new idea." The sink is by Abey, faucet by Franke, and range by Qasair.

The covered entrance area is Ulla Hell's favorite aspect of the Continuous Extension. She shares: "It is the moment when the wooden sticks turn around from the balcony bands to become the ceiling of that space, the band turns around the ceiling to finally find the thematic conclusion when touching the ground. This space also frames very nicely the view towards the surrounding topography."

In our Schaudepot, the furniture is arranged chronologically, however within that order, you can identify groups and thematic correlations. Seen here is one of the first shelves in the exhibition, dealing with wooden furniture that preceded the era in which functionalism peaked.

An installation view of Unfinished: Thoughts Left Visible, one of three inaugural shows that will be on view when the Met Breuer opens on March 18. The thematic survey presents a series of works, from Renaissance to the present day, that were left incomplete by their makers.

The Montecito residence—designed by Kristine Woolsey, now of MAYA Design—is yet another home we'll be sharing. Working with a midcentury gem that the homeowners wished to preserve, Woolsey updated it in ways that would make it more functional for a growing family. The first design decision they made was to embrace the existing butterfly roof and turn it into a thematic element.

The sparing use of black in the bespoke furniture is reminiscent of the passageway’s walls and thematic coloring. Subtle notes of pale green are used to annotate each room, paired to the same green found in the famous Zsolnay ceramics that adorn numerous historical structures inside and outside of Budapest, including the rooftop of the Paris Court building itself.

She continues, “Four gable-roof buildings complement the centrally located library, each one solving its own specific part of the program in accordance with the adjoining section: The east building is for cooking and gardening; the south building is for arts and crafts; the west building houses law, science, and music; and the north building, accommodating the areas for rest and recovery, contains meditation and self development. Linking the volumes together—thematically as well as systematically—the library functions as the core and the bloodstream of the project.

A lover of multimedia artwork herself; Deborah Argyropoulos turned more then a few heads with the series of abstract paint and integrated metal works she created and put out in 2013-14. The work pictured is an example from the series. Not a frame, the metal elements are integrated with purpose directly into the art. This allows extreme transitions from often playful or whimsical color studies that feed into straight forward, honest, and super industrial metalwork. These works are amazing to look upon and study as a viewer, and when first shown the majority of the series was sold immediately. Fortunately, Ms. Argyropoulos enjoyed the process, and loves the powerful presence this style of her work offers, so she still paints one or two of these a year depending on her schedule and if a specific thematic request is presented by a client or gallery that is exciting to pursue.
