Simultaneously sculptural and pragmatic, the undulating form of the W Magazine stand’s molded plywood is both pleasing and useful. It’s compact enough for small spaces, though you may be loath to cover up the figurative grain pattern of the walnut with your magazines. $119-$129

This hanging rack meets all the requirements of the loft-owning glitterati: brushed anodized aluminum with a flowing, organic shape. Magazines must be folded to fit, but this Gehryesque flourish could just as well stand alone on your wall. Read more about the Wallpaper Magazine Rack here.

With a shape that is at once unexpected and timeless, the Kanto Magazine Rack is a container that has been stripped to its most essential form. The Kanto can hold a stack of magazines, books, or newspapers, and can even be used to hold firewood beside a hearth.

Janet Echelman’s “Skies Painted with Unnumbered Sparks”

Created to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the TED Conference and only up from March 15-22, the web of netting suspended between the Fairmont Waterfront and the Vancouver Convention Center was a wonder. Echelman says her work is, in part inspired by the idea of “feeling sheltered, but connected to the limitless sky,” and the crowds that gathered and interacted seemed to feel similarly inspired.

The sculpture combined Wolverine-like strength, sophisticated technology and gorgeous execution, and was a massive technical challenge for Echelman and the team of more than 100 designers and engineers. Aaron Koblin, Creative Director of the Data Arts Team in Google’s Creative Lab, designed the public interface, which literally allows pedestrians to walk by and “paint the sky” with an open mobile browser.

This simple plastic-and-aluminum bottle rack, designed with a small footprint and made to be easily stacked, is about as straightforward and crowd-pleasing as a bottle of good cheap merlot.

"We find ourselves in the marginal group who still love a simple slice of toast and decided to design something to emphasize this as well as solve a problem that hasn't been addressed for a good 20 to 30 years," Pedersen says of this toast rack. "The size and shape of bread has changed, and so we found that our old inherited toast racks didn't work anymore! Our solution is a simple combination of a wooden breadboard base with a steel or brass rack, which clips in nicely and holds toast [slices] of varying thickness."
