Riffing on the Los Angeles phenomenon of people "murdering out" their cars—that is, removing all the trim and blacking everything out—architect Barbara Bestor and craftsman Eric Lamers covered most surfaces in this Los Angeles kitchen with matte black laminate, including the fridge and the overhead cabinets.

Living small is par for the course in New York City, but accommodating a family of four in under 700 square feet rarely looks as effortless as in this storage-smart renovation. Scott Oliver and Margarita McGrath of noroof architects created many clever built-ins and transformable furniture in this apartment. Photo by Raimund Koch. See how the rooms transform in this extended slideshow.

Here's the first image in the slideshow, showing a plan view of the $12,000 "Keeping it Real" transformation. Christoper worked up the floor plan in BoConcept's proprietary 'Furnish' software program. It's pretty rudimentary but it does give a sense of spatial layout. Visible in the plan are the main things to work around, including our existing fireplace, doors, and windows (including our bay window alcove).

Jason Gec is a third-year student at RMIT and helped in the construction of the Black Teahouse. He remarked that Fujimori was "hardly a stickler about the building," and encouraged them to do the work as they saw fit. Jason took a lot of the photos in this slideshow.

Asher Israelow incorporated brass hardware in this adaptive reuse of a steamer trunk. He found the antique piece and outfitted it with new wheels, drawers, and brass hardware. "Designers were playing it safe with stainless steel and overusing the material," he told us on the show floor.

A feather of wit in a sea of gravity at Giardini (the pavilions at theArsenale were a bit more light-hearted), Tom Sachs mocks the successes and failures of modernism through the devices of Le Corbusier. Here, he presents a model juxtaposing the form of Villa Savoye with that of a McDonald's, collectively titled the 'McBusier.'

In our May issue, we profiled the OSU Knowlton School of Architecture and their entry to the Decathlon was one of my favorites, both inside and out. The home's living spaces are organized around a central core, hence the name of the project, the enCORE. The house is shielded by an attractive extruded polycarbonate rain screen that protects the home from the elements and increases the home's R-value, a measure of thermal resistance; the screens also hide the angled solar panels. The surrounding decking is made from TimberTech, a composite of vinyl and sawdust, which requires virtually zero maintenance after it's installed.

Past exhibits in this long space between moving walkways have included a tribute to Russell Wright and his ceramics work. For this show, on display through June 2011, the SFO Museum collaborated with the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to host an exhibition featuring old and discarded materials made new, whether as license plates turned to dustpans or candy wrappers transformed into dresses.
