Living small is par for the course in New York City, but accommodating a family of four in under 700 square feet rarely looks as effortless as in this storage-smart renovation. Scott Oliver and Margarita McGrath of noroof architects created many clever built-ins and transformable furniture in this apartment. Photo by Raimund Koch. Riffing on the Los Angeles phenomenon of people "murdering out" their cars—that is, removing all the trim and blacking everything out—architect Barbara Bestor and craftsman Eric Lamers covered most surfaces in this Los Angeles kitchen with matte black laminate, including the fridge and the overhead cabinets.

Here's the first image in the slideshow, showing a plan view of the $12,000 "Keeping it Real" transformation. Christoper worked up the floor plan in BoConcept's proprietary 'Furnish' software program. It's pretty rudimentary but it does give a sense of spatial layout. Visible in the plan are the main things to work around, including our existing fireplace, doors, and windows (including our bay window alcove).

Jason Gec is a third-year student at RMIT and helped in the construction of the Black Teahouse. He remarked that Fujimori was "hardly a stickler about the building," and encouraged them to do the work as they saw fit. Jason took a lot of the photos in this slideshow.

One afternoon last fall, the CMG team returned to the sculpture garden to add one final touch. As I reported in a Dwell.com post and slideshow, they 'inoculated' the volcanic stone walls with lichen spores to create what they call "the ultimate minimal garden." Over the next many years, the lichen will grow into patches of electric green and orange. The project architects Conger and Rayna Deniord, the project architect (shown here), conceived of the organism as a primal way of introducing nature into the otherwise spare, minimalist rooftop space.

A MODERN HOME IN A SOUTH CAROLINA MARSH

In our July/August issue we profile a stunning modern home designed by architect James Choate of the Atlanta firm Surber Barber Choate & Hertlein. Located in a 5,000-acre nature preserve in South Carolina, the house is a rare instance of bold contemporary architecture in the region; as Choate puts it, "to put a contemporary house in the Lowcountry is a real shocker." We shared a single image in our Houses We Love column; to see more of the glass-walled great room, inside and out, click through our slideshow.

Master Japanese architect Terunobu Fujimori is an original thinker, and a pro at melding ancient traditions with modern design. So who better to offer a quick primer on how to char your own cedar wood, in order to seal the wood against rot, rain, and fire? Here, six (only slightly dangerous!) steps to transform your boards into surprisingly sleek and smart siding. To see this kind of cladding in action, check out our Facade Focus slideshow.

Fujimori, demonstrating the process of charring cedar boards, packs newspaper into the base of three planks that have been bound together. To begin the charring process, the newspaper that has been packed between the boards is set on fire.

Early commissions came from locally based brands Pacific Iron and Glenn of California, through which he worked with greats such as Greta Magnusson Grossman. In 1953, he began his longtime collaboration with North Carolina manufacturer Thayer Coggin, which still produces his classic designs—including the Tighten Up Recliner, see next slide—to this day. First introduced in 1965, the chair stows a host of hidden luxuries and finely crafted details beneath its understated appearance, including a reclining mechanism and a walnut frame.

Featuring reclaimed wood from the original house, a single sliding door covers only half of the kitchen pantry. As the door slides, china and glassware are revealed on one side; the other side holds Anne’s design library and favored heirlooms. The sliding door follows a track installed in the concrete underfloor; the shelves are supported by recessed steel brackets, strong enough to hold the weight of a man—or a baby. An additional full-size pantry is located inside the laundry room, toward the original bungalow.
