Sheep skin stools by Gerður Guðmundsdóttir-A graduate from IADT Tampa, Guðmunsdóttir pays homage to Mies van der Rohe but creates pieces that are distinctly Icelandic. For her DesignMarch submissions, she accepted a challenge from her uncle to work with Icelandic sheep skin, famous for its long outer coat. The result, a bench and a set of stools showing the versatility of the material. "I love the raw and wildness of the natural uncut sheepskin,” Guðmunsdóttir told me. “I made a bench using that, and went the opposite direction for a completely different but complimentary look for the stools with cut sheepskin." These cashmere-and-merino wool Love Blankets designed by Holly Berry are woven at a 250-year-old mill in Scotland; cleverly, the pattern spells out the word "love" in Morse code.

WOOL DOT THROW A reversible perky polka-dot pattern in jacquard weave graces this jaunty merino wool blanket by Copenhagen textile designer Anne Rosenberg.

Bellweater Materials was the other sheep's wool company at the conference. Its product is made using waste wool--wool that ranchers sell abroad at a loss and that is too coarse for clothing--that is put through the first step of felting so that it holds together as a batting. The goal of the company, which was founded two years ago, was to great a good product that would generate a lot of domestic jobs (it's made 100-percent in the U.S.) in addition to a lot of money.

Colorado. David Larabee and Dexter Thornton are the forces behind DoubleButter, a furniture manufacturer based in Denver. Available in forming plywood or walnut with steel legs, the Sheep End Table is a playful storage piece.

This midcentury gem lays in Crestwood Hills, in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, an endangered enclave of midcentury post-and-beam houses designed by A. Quincy Jones and Whitney R. Smith. Elise Loehnen and Rob Fissmer bought their house, which dates to 1950, in 2012, furnishing the living room with a Jasper sofa by Room & Board, Laccio tables by Marcel Breuer, and a wool sisal rug from Madison Flooring and Design.

The architects focused on natural and locally sourced materials wherever possible, from local larch to the custom-made sofas and rugs woven from local sheep wool by Hermann Kühbacher. The furnishings were mainly custom made and designed by Plasma Studio.

Norwegian designers Torbjørn Anderssen and Espen Voll, of former Norway Says fame, now known as Anderssen & Voll, have created the wool throw Berg, meaning ”mountain”. Traditional textile craft is merged with a modern pattern and color combinations. According to manufacturer Røros Tweed the throws will be available in the US through Design Within Reach from the autumn of 2013.

What do you wish was easier to make and source in the USA? I would love to see more U.S.-made fabrics and textiles. With the loss of 650 textile mills in the USA between 1997 and 2009, it has been difficult for our makers to find skilled weavers and leather workers.
